Swim
Comments: It looked like the two corner buoys were in closer than last year, but farther apart. So you didn't swim out as far, but swam longer parallel to shore. You can almost walk to the first turn buoy and most people don't start swimming until they have to. Too much opportunity to walk makes the swim part of the race pretty weak. Anyway, I did my usual MOP performance and got out feeling winded since I haven't done andy short course races in awhile. Transition 1
Comments: A good T1 would have moved me up a place. I continue to be slow at T1. Bike
Comments: So this is why I keep coming back to this race. This is a hilly course and a few are pretty tough. A great way to see where you're at with bike fitness. Last year I used my road bike. This year I used my tri bike, but was a little surprised that I wasn't much faster with it. The last two years it's rained so I was careful on some the downhills b/c it's not worth it at all if you go down at those speeds. Transition 2
Comments: This is more like it. Run
Comments: At the start I could feel my calves wanting to cramp, but they didn't. Not too much to talk about here. I passed one guy in my age group with about a half mile to go. Not sure if the guy that finished ahead of me was in the elite wave or just ahead of me. Post race
Warm down: After doing a half and full iron this year, I think that I feel more uncomfortable when I finish a short course race. Event comments: The swim needs work here. Post race meal not good or enough variety. Bike course outstanding, please don't make it easier or I won't do this race anymore! Last updated: 2011-09-18 12:00 AM

Last year in 2010 I did this race and the overall winner of it had done IM WI the week before. At the time, I had just registered for IM WI 2011 and thought it would be cool to do this race the week after it as well. My wife usually goes with me, but she wanted to stick to her marathon training for her big race in a few weeks. Alright, I'll go solo and just drive up the morning of. It's almost a 2 hr. drive for me, and on the way there I was feeling some stomach upset. I pull into a McDonald's and a guy's cleaning the bathroom, I mean he's in the middle of cleaning the toilet seat. Whatever, I need to go, so excuse me bud. Feeling bad about negating the sparkle of the place, I reach for the tp and, yeah, nothing. This was a messy one so no chance of taking care of this later. Ah, little help here ?, but no luck b/c there was a serious language barrier and I didn't have time for a game of charades. Ended up using paper towels and was ready to make up for some lost time. Did race day registration which I think is the first time that this was offered at this race perhaps b/c athlete entry seems to be down this year in some tris that I've done. It wasn't supposed to rain until the afternoon but it was a drizzle or light rain from the start of the bike to the finish for me.
Saw a lot people without wetsuits, seems to be common for this race, and glad I had mine. Part of the reason I like this one is that the weather usually sucks. If it's not raining, it's for sure pretty cold at the start at least, and this always makes for good post-race talk. I did not get in the water prior to swim start this time, just too cold for that today.
