Pre-race routine:

Up early at 4:10am for hour drive to Clemmons. Usual breakfast of oatmeal for a prerace. Made to the race site by 6am. I spent 30 mins driving the race course. Which is a wise move.

Picked up my packet, got marked. Started to setup my Transition Area. I was one hot mess this morning. Ran into a competitor from another tri this summer.

Did I mention how cold it was - like really cold
Event warmup:

I went out on the bike course for a a 5 mile ride - and decided to add a layer because it was cold.

I ws one of the few that got in the pool - not sure if this was wise our not..
Swim
  • 06m 12s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

I assume my time was good. It was really choppy for a pool and slow. I was passed at the 100 and then passed two more. Not my favorite. I was really cold and it affected my legs.

Rather disappointed in my swim.
What would you do differently?:

Wetsuit?
Transition 1
  • 02m 15s
Comments:

Better but not great - I would think I was faster. The run across slanted grass with my bike was not great. Not at all.

Comments:

Oh the course - officially hated the no pass rule on Middlebrook. I know it cost me time. On the way out, caught up to a woman and just had to wait. Once on course, I passed so many people (with two laps, it was hard to know who was who). Got passed once. Literally passed over 40 people and it may be over 60.

On the way in, as I was turning into Middlebrook ran into a young girl. She was braking downhill and I had to pass her. Really had no choice.

I think this cost me winning my group.
Transition 2

Comments:

Felt faster, again the running in the grass was strange. I know this not the normal site...
Run
  • 27m 53s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

Ugh - the cold really hit me here. My feet were frozen from the swim and bike and just had no turn over at all. Not happy at all in the run. I was leading my category heading into the run but had nothing.

Interestingly I was passing folks on the run..

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The weather for one..
