Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 3/3
Pre-race routine:

Got up about 6:00AM and had half a bagel with peanut butter and a little bit of chai tea. Drove to the event and set up. Went inside to stay warm and get chipped/body-marked.
Event warmup:

Ran around a little bit, mostly to stay warm.
Swim
  • 11m 57s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim set-up was good. It wasn't too crowded by the time I got there. I was pretty tired by the time I had to get out of the pool and repeat the serpentine laps. Probably a nutrition problem. This was a reverse tri so the swim was last and I was spent. Need to work on swim speed this winter too.
What would you do differently?:

Better nutrition.
Transition 1
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

Reverse tri so T1 was just peeling off one layer of my top, put on helmet and change shoes. Went pretty well. Had a small problem with kid-team members standing around. Not enough to make or break a place but slightly frustrating. (Their coach corrected them when he saw the problem). I knew I'd be starting up hill so I made sure the bike was in a high gear.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how the person who placed #2 did it in 20 seconds and do that!
Bike
  • 55m 43s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 13.46 mile/hr
Comments:

Not sure why my time was slow. I ride this route regulary. My training has been hit 'n miss lately so that's probably part of it. I was having trouble shifting to my big front gear. Legs were tired too early. Need to work on bike during the winter
What would you do differently?:

I'd like to say I'd push it harder but I'm not sure I was capable.
Transition 2
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

Reverse tri so T2 was strip down to tri shorts and top and put on goggles. Didn't encounter and problems except maybe getting long tights off over the large timing chip.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how #2 did it in 17 seconds and do that. Maybe taking off shoes while riding. Not ready for that yet. Maybe when seconds start to matter more.
Run
  • 30m 16s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 09m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Nice run. Not used to pacing without music yet. Started out downhill on pavement then uber-hilly through the sand. Advertised as being a flat/fast course. Don't agree with that but it was a good run and a nice challenge. I was surprised when it was half way and we started aiming back toward the start.
What would you do differently?:

Practice sand hill running!
Post race
Warm down:

walked around, had a cookie

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Haven't been consistent with training lately. Too much life getting in the way. This is also probably the most challenging course I've done.

Event comments:

Post race was a kids race which was fun to watch. Not a lot of food or activities but this is a first year race so it was small but well organized. The prizes to the overall winners were nice. Would def do this one again.
