Swim
Comments: Once I got my face used to the temperature of the water, I was able to do the swim without thinking too much about it. I panicked a little when the water went black under me (we went past the shelf) just because I wasn't expecting it when it happened. I calmed down in about 4 strokes and just kept going. It was great to see so many emergency volunteers out on the water given all of the swim issues recently. They were on my mind, and I probably took it a bit easier than I normally would've because of it. What would you do differently?: Not too much Transition 1
Comments: Coming out of the water, I took my time to get my head straight a little. I've never been great at getting out of the water and running, so I walked the beach part of the "transition". They said they measured the distance from the swim exit to transition area to be .35 miles. Long enough! What would you do differently?: I need to practice the getting out of the water and running thing somehow. Bike
Comments: When I went over the 20 mile "check in" point, I noticed my timing chip didn't beep. Turns out, the battery on it died sometime between when I left T1 to head out on the bike (I have my bike out time) and when I hit the 20 mile mark. It apparently caused enough alarm in my family who were following me online that they started calling my husband to make sure I was ok. So, my times for my bike and run are based off of my GPS data. (My age group & overall placements are estimated because of this.) What would you do differently?: I probably went a little too easy on parts of the course, but I had a great time and that's all that mattered for this race (being my first half distance). Transition 2
Comments: I made the horrible mistake of sitting to put on my socks and shoes. I was tipping over trying to do it standing, so sitting was the better idea. I managed to put my left sock on upside down the first time, so it took me a few seconds to fix that issue. Got up, got my race number on, grabbed my Infinit, and put a smile on my face. What would you do differently?: Should've reapplied my sunscreen! Run
Comments: About 0.6 miles into the run, both knees started bothering me on the inside of each. I decided right then that this race was about getting to the finish line before the 8:30 cutoff, whatever it took. So, I ran what I could and walked what I had to. Given that I walked MUCH more than I ran, I'm happy with the 14:xx/mile pace. It's nowhere near my normal running pace, but it is what it is and it's what was meant for the day. I tried to keep a positive attitude about the time I was spending on the course and just soak in the new-to-me scenery. Might as well, right?! What would you do differently?: Make my knees not hurt? :) Post race
Warm down: Walked around for a bit after getting some ART and a massage. What limited your ability to perform faster: I'd definitely say my knees on the run. If they hadn't been bothering me, I likely would've finished an hour before I did. Event comments: Even with the timing chip issues I experienced, I'd definitely do this race again if I were looking to travel to Maine again. Looking forward to my next Rev3 event in Williamsburg next year! Last updated: 2011-09-19 12:00 AM
