Swim
Comments: First OWS of the season, so not bad. Large wave with men 40-44 also going off. Lots of bumping for the first 500m or so. Got caught in a sandwich for awhile but was able to break off. Had some open water in the middle 500m but then seemed to get very crowded again. Swam over a couple of people from previous wave. Seemed longer than 1.2 miles. Very dizzy when finished. What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 1
Comments: Lots of men taking their time up the ramp and crowding the entry into transition...had to yell excuse me multiple times. Was a little dizzy from swim and wetsuit got a little stuck on my feet, so I slowed down a bit to take my time to get shoes on. What would you do differently?: Not much..would like to learn the whole shoes on bike and jump, but we'll see Bike
Comments: Was having a great bike until the last 40. Got way to aggressive on the gearing and dropped my chain twice in 4 miles. First time SAG wagon was there and helped out, but second time on my own and some guy who lives on the course was trying to help but was basically getting in my way of fixing it and ended up catching the chain on my finger..ouch! Got it going again but lost 9 minutes overall...ugh!! What would you do differently?: Little gentler on the gearing...check cadence on the hills. Transition 2
Comments: Took my time to clean off my bloody finger with some water and then got on my way. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Started out good...felt a little dehydrated, but started taking lots of water. First 5 miles were good but started slowing towards end of hills...really slowed in the middle due to cramping in my right quad. Took salt tablet at mile 7 and it finally started feeling better. Felt great till about mile 12 and just couldn't pull out the extra energy for the last hill.. What would you do differently?: Work on timing with gels and salt tablets. Stopped for gatorade and water at every station and that worked really well. Find that extra gear Post race
Warm down: Ran finish line with the kids and then grabbed some food. Took kids swimming and then skies opened up and stared to pour..drove home and hobbled to a warm bath What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing other than needing to find that perfect pace on the run. Event comments: Very glad I did it and finished under 6:30 hours. Disappointed with the bike issues but looking at times I'm at a good place to start the season..this is a tough race right out of the gate. Last updated: 2011-09-20 12:00 AM
