Run
Comments: We started with the wind behind us, and if you take a look at the garmin data and the lap splits, you can see where we turned around... 1st km - I felt pretty good. I was worried Lisa was going out too hard, she has a habit of hitting it too hard and dying. She's not run a 10km before... There were people everywhere, and I cannot work out how there were walkers in front of us, it gives me the shits. 2nd km - Still not quite warm or comfortable with my pace. Starting to get some decent music on the ipod though, so was just trotting along. There was a drink station in the middle of this km so I walked through to get a drink and kept jogging. 3rd km - I started to feel problems in my left hip. I must have had crap music on... nah, really, I've had a lot of work done on my right hand side because of all the issues/injuries/disabilities, and kind of been neglecting the other side, and it was aching. I think we actually turned around mid this km. The wind basically smashed us in the face when we turned the corner, it was hard! 4th & 5th km - Walking through aid stations only. I was starting to feel a blister developing, and Lisa's pace was starting to drop and I could see the struggle in her face now, but we kept it up. We passed the 5km timing mat at 38min 34sec, which is a PB for me by like 3 minutes. So that's a good thing. 6th km - Plenty of walking was done here. Lisa really struggling and red now, and the wind was just getting worse. Found out later there were like 40km gusts, and I struggle to run when it's still... 7th km - Lisa told me to leave her and just go here. This is about where I got comfy and found a good rhythm and just could have kept going and going... but I got her back up and running by 8km and we kept on. 8th and 9th km... probably the hardest. When we turned the corner to come back with the wind, even though it was at our backs, I started to feel way too hot because it was no longer in my face cooling me down... I can't win can I??? Bits and pieces of walking and encouraging Lisa... Was still feeling good and again could have gone but I didn't want to since we were doing this together. 10th km - was a little short in the end according to the Garmin, but I changed the song and picked up my pace for the last 500m. Pity I still had that much left in the tank when I finished. What would you do differently?: Probably make a deal with Lisa to do the first 7 or 8 km together and then do whatever we can in the last 2 or 3. I probably had a bit more in the tank. Post race
Warm down: None. Get my bag, scull some water, and flop on the ground for a stretch. We did a little bit of walking (minus the shoes) but that was about it. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training. I haven't run since Shepp. But fact is, this was a 4 min or so PB for me, so nothing wrong with that at all. Event comments: Very good race again this year. I like the idea of ladies only, doesn't make me feel as self concious (says the hardcore rebel triathlete.... ) Last updated: 2011-09-20 12:00 AM

Eat half a protein bar on the way there, pick up Lisa's race kit and have a sit on the grass to eat some powerbar lollies.
I was glad I didn't feel too nervous actually. And that I got a decent sleep the night before. I am normally terrible before races!
Get rid of the bag, feel uncoordinated in the aerobic warmup and understand why I don't do step classes, then head to the start like to have a fight with my garmin....
