Swim
Comments: I had been feeling crappy all week - congested with a bad cough, so I was just going to play it by ear. My lungs felt below capacity, so I decided not to hit it too hard. I drafted well until the first turn buoy, when the woman I was drafting off of faded, and then I tried to catch a draft off the fast swimmers in the wave behind mine, but most were too fast for me. Because my lung capacity wasn't 100%, I fell into more of a 3/2/2/3 breathing pattern instead of my usual every 3. Navigation was good and I caught up to people in all of the waves ahead of ours (we were 4th). Was very dizzy coming out of the water, probably because I was congested. What would you do differently?: Maybe try ear plugs next time. Transition 1
Comments: Was very dizzy coming out of the water. The suit came off fine, but I was so dizzy that I had to sit down to put my bike shoes on. Once I got on the bike, I was fine. What would you do differently?: Still haven't tried mounting with my shoes on the bike - something to shoot for next year. Bike
Comments: I loved this course! Short rollers, no huge climbs, and a few flats to get up to speed. Beautiful! Because I was sick, I told myself I would back off at any hint of nausea or cramping. I did well with the nausea, but I may have ignored the foot cramps a little.... I passed quite a few women and some men, and otherwise just felt really good. Stayed aero on the downs and flats, and stood on some of the shorter hills. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I think backing off at the first sign of nausea is key to a good run. Transition 2
Comments: Took the time to use my albuterol in transition because my breathing was a little raspy. What would you do differently?: Again, need to practice taking shoes off on the bike, but I haven't gotten there yet. Something to work on for next year. Run
Comments: I don't know how accurate the course distance is, but this is a 10K PR!! (of course, I haven't run any stand-alone 10K's since 2009.) I held back on the first 2 miles, knowing there was a big hill at mile 3. And I went back to my old method of walking at water stations - something that I'd given up this season and I think it really hurt me at Luray. I was dreading the hill at mile 3 and the other one between 5 and 6, but they were over before I knew it. I saw two ladies behind me at the mile 5 turnaround, and I was determined not to let them catch me, so I took off up the hill, and maintained that effort until the end. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I think backing off on the bike and the first 2 miles on the run left me with enough to finish strong and have a great race. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, packed up my stuff, took a shower (one of the fantastic things about this venue!), at the post-race pasta meal. What limited your ability to perform faster: I would say being sick the week before and on race day did, but I think it actually helped. It forced me to back off and gave me enough for a final kick at the end of the run. Event comments: Setup events always puts on a great race, and Smith Mountain Lake is the BEST race venue. Up at 4:30, on the road at 5 for a 2 hour drive to Smith Mountain Lake. Had my usual 2 cups of coffee and dry Honey Nut Cheerios at 3 hrs before the race start. Got to the park just before 7 and had a great parking spot, close to transition.
Short bike to make sure I was in the right gear for the little hill out of transition, short run to clear my lungs of gunk, put on my wetsuit, had a gel, and went down to the lake for a brief swim warmup.
