Pre-race routine:

So I decided to sign up for this the Tuesday before. I did Ironman Wisconsin 2 weeks ago but I was feeling pretty good so I figured what the heck? The long term weather forecast called for sunny skys and 75 for a high and that sounded pretty good to me. Come the Saturday before, that changed to 55 for a high, 40 for a low, overcast and windy. Eh, what can you do though, that's Iowa weather for you. I went to a friend's wedding on Saturday, did packet pickup between the wedding and reception, and actually behaved myself at the reception. No beer and no overeating for me! We left pretty early and I was in bed by 10. It was really nice to sleep in my own bed for once before a race. Got up at 6 and headed out to the race site to set up transition. Brrr, a little chilly, but the water was 63 so I figured it wouldn't be too bad. Got the wetsuit on early to stay warm and waited for my wave to start.
Event warmup:

Nothing, too cold to warm up.
Swim
  • 27m 6s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 39s / 100 yards
Comments:

The race started from the boat ramp and was a little crowded at first. I started wide and pushed the first couple hundered hard, then tried to cut over onto the buoy line. For as easy as this swim is to navigate because of the foam noodles on the buoy line, I sure did a poor job of it. Not sure why but I just can't swim in a straight line. Other than navigation issues the swim was pretty uneventful. I thought I pushed fairly hard, so I was expecting a little better time but what can you do!
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to navigate better, I lose a lot of time because of this...
Transition 1
  • 02m 40s
Comments:

My fingers were pretty numb coming out of the water, so I was having a hard time doing everything. That probably explains the slow time. I also took the time to put on arm warmers and gloves, so that also cost some time.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure, try to move faster...
Bike
  • 1h 05m 41s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 22.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Given the ironman 2 weeks ago, this was a solid ride for me. The first 6 miles or so were headed north and right into the wind, which wasn't too bad but did slow things down a bit. I just tried to not lose too much time in this section, as it is also mostly uphill. Hit the turnaround of an out-and-back section and was up over 30 mph with the wind for a while. That was fun! The rest of the ride was more small rollers and flats, nothing overly memorable, but this is a good fast bike course. I was surprised my legs felt as strong as they did. I think I actually picked up the pace the last 5 miles or so. Made it back to the transition area and did the flying dismount.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 00m 44s
Comments:

Would have been even faster, but I struggled to get my arm warmers off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 40m 53s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Getting off the bike I could not feel my feet at all because of the cold. It was tough to run fast because of that, but I was able to hold 6:30/mi for most of the run. The run up Krieg's crossing to the turnaround wasn't that bad. Finally abour 4.5 mi in I could start to feel my feet again. Picked up the pace the last half mile and came within a few minutes of my Oly PR at the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, best I could do.
Post race
Warm down:

Had a drink and a couple of donut holes, ran back to my truck to get warm clothes, and waited for the award ceremony. I got 2nd AG and 1st Blackhawk Co. finisher :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Ironman 2 weeks ago, cold weather...

Event comments:

This is a great race and is so well organized! I enjoy it every time I do it and I'm glad to see it is growing!
