![]() Swim
Comments: This was only my second race in open water, and my first using a wetsuit. We were swimming into the sun at the beginning of the race, which made it very difficult to sight the first few bouys. After the first turn, it became easier to sight, but my sighting became worse after the second turn. The bouys were angled a little more toward the beach, but we were supposed to swim toward the boat ramp. There was a "whacky, waving, inflateable, arm flailing, tube guy" set up at the boat ramp so we could use it for sighting, but I found myself tracking to the left, toward the beach. I had to correct quite a bit to get to the boat ramp. What would you do differently?: I spent the summer in New Mexico, and did not swim from May 8th at the White Lake Sprint Triathlon until the end of August when I got back to NC. For being out of swim shape, I was pleased with my performance, but there is a lot of room for improvement. I think one of the best ways for me to improve is to get in open water as much as possible. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: I unzipped my wetsuit and pulled down the top half as I ran up the boat ramp. I took my cap and goggles off on the way to transistion. I was feeling a little light-headed after the swim. As I mentioned, I'm out of swim shape, and this swim took a lot more out of me than normal. I took my time in transition, pulling off the rest of my wetsuit and putting on my bike shoes and helmet while giving my head some time to level out. This made my transition slower, but I think I would have fallen off the bike if it had been much quicker. What would you do differently?: Get in swim shape so my transition can be faster, and practice taking my wetsuit off quickly. ![]() Bike
Comments: I LOVE hilly bike courses! I routinely ride on very hilly roads, and this course really played to my strengths. I began a little slow, but got up to speed fairly quick. I did a lot of passing, but only got passed by three other riders, all with nicer bikes than my own. I pushed hard on the uphills and flew on the downhills. The scenery on this course was great, and is one of the better courses I've ridden. What would you do differently?: I guess train more, but I think that I'm getting close to the point were only a more advanced bike will improve my performance. One of these days when I make a lot more money than I do now, I'll invest in some speed. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: I realized about 10 miles into the bike course that I had forgotten to pretie my running shoes that I left in transition. I put it out of my mind and decided to deal with it when I got there. I didn't have anyone behind me as I turned back toward the lake to go into transition, so I slowed down to get my shoes off since it's been a while since I've practicied it. I jumped off the bike and headed into transition. I got my hat and race number and put on my shoes the old fashioned way, tying them right then and there. After they were on, I ran out of transition to hit the run course. What would you do differently?: Remember to pre tie my shoes or get some elastic laces like Yanks. Practice taking my shoes off while moving faster a bit more so I can do it fast again. ![]() Run
Comments: Great run. I hit the run course and began pounding out a pretty good pace. I hit the hills hard and made up some great time. I tried to hold on to my pace the whole time, and managed it fairly well. I was passed once right before the end of the run course, but I held on, kept him close, and crossed the finish line mere seconds after the other guy. What would you do differently?: I stopped running very early into the summer. I don't have a good explanation, I just stopped. Since beginning my training again at the end of August, I have had a very limited amount of running going on. I can count the number of runs on less than two hands. For the running shape I am currently in, I am pleased with a 22:07. In the future, my run training will be more extensive. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Just walked around a bit, ate some free food, found Eric and cheered on my sister, brother-law, and Eric's wife Jeanne as they came across the finish line. After they all came in, we checked times and placings, cleaned up transition, and headed to the beach for the awards ceremony. The award was awesome! It was a 20oz clear glass mug with the race logo. It will be perfect for post race beers tonight. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training over the summer months, lack of experience in open water, a less advanced bike than many of the other participants. Event comments: Great race, great venue, great awards! I'm psyched to do another race at Pinehurst, maybe the international distance. Last updated: 2011-09-27 12:00 AM

Got up at 3:30AM and headed out to meet my sister, brother-in-law, and two friends to head to Pinehurst. Ate two small pear muffins with a glass of chocolate milk before hitting the road. Packed peanut butter, banana, cinnamon, and agave nector wrapped in a tortilla for the road and ate it two hours before start time. Parked the cars and walked the half mile to the transition area. Dropped my bike in transistion and headed to packet pick-up, body marking, and chip pick-up.
After setting up my transition area, I pulled on the wetsuit and headed down to the water for a short warm-up. Swam to the 100 meter bouy and back. This was my first race with my wetsuit, so I wanted to make sure I would be able to strip the top part off quickly exiting the water, so I practicied that once before lining up for the start. Before starting, we all stood around on the beach and wished eachother good luck since we were spread out amongst three separate waves.
