Pre-race routine:

Got up at 6:30 and watched Sportscenter and talked to Derek. Sent him off to his last call night of residency (woo-hoo!), got dressed, and had 2 Eggo's, yogurt, and coffee. Still fairly stiff , so I sat with heating pad on left calf for about 5 minutes and it seemed to help some.
Event warmup:

Checked in, got t-shirt and goodie bag. Hit the portajohn twice. Jogged a little in the parking lot and calves felt surprisingly good. It had been raining hard since 9:00 the night before, but we thought the rain had passed...wrong! At about 8:15 and again at 8:29 it poured. At least it washed all the pee and vomit out of the streets before the race.

Comments:

First of all, I didn't realize until after I had started the race that today is the First Anniversary of the day I started triathlon training! I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate (except to have Derek there)!

Like I said, it started to pour at 8:29. The gun went off and I started out a little fast. At about the first 1/2 mile, some man behind me tells me, "look out for the grate." I avoid the slippery grate and look to my left to see this man, a RACE WALKER, pass me up. Ugh. At this point, I thought my 5k PR was in the toilet. I had no idea I was going to miss my 1 mile PR by 7 seconds.

I hit mile 1 feeling great. HR was elevated, but it didn't feel like it at all. Around mile 1.5, it started to rain again...HARD. I actually enjoyed the rain. Running through puddles was fun!

At this point, I noticed 3 people I knew ahead of me. What the hell! I pulled out my fishing line and started to reel them in. I passed them just before mile 2 and never looked back. What a feeling!!

Hit mile 2 and noted my negative split with a "Holy Shit!"

Still raining after mile 2 and I started saying out loud, "We had sting-ing rain, and big old fat rain, and rain that blew in sideways" Run Forrest Run!!

Turned onto N. Peters for the last straightaway and started to run out of gas. My quads were burning, but the claves and hammies felt good. I didn't walk (YES!), just thinking that I won't feel this bad after I cross the finish line. I was about 20 yards from the finish and noticed that the official time clock said 33:50, so I hauled it to the finish under 34:00 official race time.
I love NOTC races becuase they let you write in your own time. When I looked down at my watch for my time, I couldn't believe it...33:40! My last 5k race in November was 38:30. Awww yeeeeah!!!
What would you do differently?:

Not do step aerobics 3 days before a race! Other than that, nothing at all.
Post race
Warm down:

I looked around for Jeremy (jjweav), turned in my time, got some water, stretched a little at the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing, really. My calves didn't hurt at all during the race, so I don't think they limited me at all.

Event comments:

I'm really glad I did this race. Some people say they'd rather not spend the 20 or 30 bucks to race little local races like this one. For me, I think racing brings out the competitiveness that I don't necessarily have when I'm training during the week.

Happy One Year Tri-Training Anniversary to me!!!

No official race pics, so I got out the camera and did my PR Happy Dance!
