Swim
Comments: At Harris Lake I got a face full of water about 10feet into it - went into full panic mode and never got over it. Simulated drowning is a strong force on my little brain. This time let the wave start - took it easy and stayed right and had a wonderful, relaxing experience. still can't swim straight. but I remembered to roll, kept under control, and really enjoyed the swim. What would you do differently?: more sighting in last 750M. I fell into a complacent mode and dig some zigging and zagging. also, I did 0 kicks for the swim. In the future, that might be good to do. Transition 1
Comments: it was cold, so I pulled on a long sleeve shirt. (gloves attached to bike). should have dried upper arms prior to shirt pull on. Also, like an idiot, I got wetsuit down around waist per plan, but totally forgot to remove cap while running. What would you do differently?: small towel on handlebars to dry body before putting on 2nd layer. Bike
Comments: executed nutrition plan, almost, with 1/2 a clif bar and 200 calories of gatorade. Two water bottles of gatorade and one of water. no cramps, all digested with ease - should have eaten more. What would you do differently?: probably could have downed another 200+ calories if I was smarter or had been using GUs. maybe took it too easy. Transition 2
Comments: Sorry to the dirty look I gave the volunteer 10M before dismount. She was SCREAMING at us to "SLOW DOWN!!!" and gave me an especially frantic "SLOOOW DOWN!!!!". Expert hot dismount. little smile to self for that volunteer. What would you do differently?: So, every time I run I practice lifting both shoes: Putting on right, putting on left, then race belt and cap in hand I go. During race: I put on right shoe, then DROP my left show. And in total race funk, I just sort of stare at the shoe on the ground. And slightly panic and think "what do I do now?!" Genuinely did not know, for like 2 seconds, how to proceed. :-) I picked it up and got back to business. Run
Comments: I rarely run on asphalt, and this is why. just not designed to run on the road. kept a very even pace, I would bet negative splits. Drinks every mile. Oh, and to that guy at mile 5 who said "it's all downhill from here!" you lied to me. and it hurt. there were at least 2 more hills. What would you do differently?: I scouted the course in warm-up and thought we cross the dam, then go around the road, turn into the marina and finish just off Denichilo court. No. You cross the dam, then peel off to the right, maybe another 80 yards - not the 200 w/ hill I was expecting. thus no sprint. well, now I know how far 0.2 miles can be. lesson learned. Post race
Warm down: Dear Race Organizers, I want to change out of my tri-shorts and would have loved to use that building. But instead we crammed 78" of tiredness into a port-a-potty to switch shorts. Not cool Zeus. What limited your ability to perform faster: Aerobically I was quite comfortable, but just don't have that "suffering" gene that the others seem to have. This was only my second tri, and had a much better swim and understand the distance a little more. Next year I'll break 3hrs. Event comments: Thanks to organizers and volunteers! Smooth race. Only regret was there was a military contingent with matching uniforms that was taking a picture together near the awards. We should have stopped the awards and given them a little appreciation. Thanks for defending the country guys, we appreciate your work and sacrifice. Last updated: 2011-10-03 12:00 AM
