Swim
Comments: Someone from a later wave actually drowned 1000ft into the swim a few minutes after I exited. What would you do differently?: Uh, swim at least once before doing a race. Gotta start hitting the pool. Shoulders felt it on the bike! Transition 1
Comments: Peed just before finish the swim so was good there. Was overcast so saved a few seconds off last year's time of 3:52.9 by not putting on sunscreen. I had put in on before but the wetsuit seems to wipe it all off. As usual spend too much time rinsing off, drying, and body-gliding my feet. Forgot my helmet--luckily I had it on the aerobars so when I took the bike off the rack it fell off and alerted me as to it's presence! What would you do differently?: I walked up the hill, guess I could jog it to cut a few seconds. Not worth it to me. Bike
Comments: Nutrition went well. Really didn't take more than a couple of sips of water for the first 15 miles. Realized my Perform was spoiled--ick! Dumped it out and picked up a gatorade around mile 10. Filled my Profile chamber and drank maybe 3/4 of that the whole way. Took a big gulp of gu every 15 miles or so, had 3oz total. Drank maybe 1 1/2 chambers of water. Only traded out fluids at the first exchange, had my full bottle of water on the back that I refilled with to keep the back bottles fairly empty. Ate table salt twice. What would you do differently?: Bike more in the off season. I did take 3 1/2 minutes off last year's time, but that could be course variance. Have been working on cadence so maybe that helped. Transition 2
Comments: Could not get the bike racked! Back upholders kept getting caught! Got changed pretty quick but had to pee. The stupid Metro's were way on the opposite side by the sprinters outside transition in the opposite direction of run start. Wasted time there too. Was 22 seconds slower than last year. What would you do differently?: Learn to pee on the bike?! No, I may pee in my wetsuit but will never pee off the bike. I guess figure out how to get the bike racked faster! Gotta take the water bottles off when I come in. Run
Comments: So thirsty on the run. Had table salt on the bike then took salt tabs at mile 2--think I overdid it! Not as many water stations as I would have liked for the heat, and could have used ice cubes at each of them as well. Took shot blox every 2 miles, gu at mile 7. Felt great on the first loop, started to bonk a bit on the second and slowed way down. Mile 1 walked up the hill, missed the marker. Craig was coming down hill as I got to top! Mile 2 20:49:08 Mile 3 9:22:34 Mile 4 10:13:66 Mile 5 10:08:63 Mile 6 9:50:78 Mile 7 missed the marker Mile 8 21:09:96 Mile 9 10:23:47 Mile 10 11:17:42 Mile 11 11:25:77 Mile 12 10:27:47 Mile 13.1 10:41:28 What would you do differently?: Maybe not go so hard on the first loop? Felt great though and had a chick behind me keeping pace so that pushed me. Stopped for water at mile 7 and she got ahead and I never caught her. Passed a TON of people on the run--probably most of the ones who passed me on the bike! Post race
Warm down: They had Coke at the finish line which was awesome. Felt pretty good although legs were a bit stiff. Did some stretching. Looked like more storms were gonna roll in and I was so cold I just wanted to get going. Wind had really picked up. Transition towels had gotten wet during the storm, so had nothing to wrap around me or dry off with so didn't go into the water to chill my legs after. Taco Bell stop on the way home! What limited your ability to perform faster: Running on trails is not my forte. Heat always a factor. Event comments: Love the shredded turkey they have after, and very excited to see Coke! Wish I had some dry clothes to put on after--everything was soaked from the rain. Thank you God my iPhone was ok in my bento box! We love this race. Lots of people saying it was understaffed in light of the drowning, but never felt that way. Hard to add aid stations as most of the run course is on horse trails and in the woods. Usually not an issue unless it's this hot. Last updated: 2011-10-22 12:00 AM

Dropped Drew off at camp then went over to Steve's. On the road around 10:30. Taco Bell stop! Got into Appleton around noon, room not ready yet. Drove over to High cliff park, pick up our race packets, ride the bikes on the course a little and check out the camp grounds. (Rode 9 miles!). Back to hotel to unpack, check supplies. Switch out my Profile chamber since the old one was cracked. We both needed Gel for our flasks, so went to Wheel and Sprocket which we saw right off the interstate and we came down College. Ended up buying a new helmet! So now new race top AND new helmet for tomorrow...uh oh! Back to hotel, walk over to Victorias around 4:30 for dinner. Stop at the coffee shop for ice cream. Back to the room to get everything in order. Bed around 9pm. Slept pretty good except people next door came in around 11 and woke me, but fell back asleep. Woke around 3 and couldn't fall back asleep. Had a 5:15 wake up call but got up around 5:00 to eat. Usual, 2 kasha bars w peanut butter and a banana. No yogurt this time. Load up the van and head to park around 6. Lot full! Parked in tiny lot by historic building which was closer to transition.
Got into the water just before the start to put my face in. Not cold at all. Pretty smooth too, no big waves. Was in wave 2, Steve in wave 5. Lost him at the start after I went to the Metro. Stranger zipped up my wetsuit for me.
