Pre-race routine:

One of my favorite events in the area, and pretty much the only off-road running I do all year. Clare and I drove down from Waterloo in the morning, the 10 AM start makes it easy to get there without having to get up super early. I had a banana and some Powerade on the way there. We're training for Goofy's Challenge at Disney World in January, so we planned this as part of long back-to-back days. We got to the race site around 9:15, picked up our packets, hit the restrooms, and check out some of the costumes. Dog the Bounty Hunter was by far my favorite! Lined up near the front and BAM we're off...
Event warmup:

None, just some walking around before the start.

Comments:

I've been running big miles training for Goofy's Challenge, and I had a 18 miler planned for the next day, so I didn't push too hard early on. My goal was to run around 1:03 and to split the 5Ks for the three loops reasonably evenly. The first and second loops went really well, legs felt very lively and the hear rate wasn't too high. The third loop I passed a few people that didn't pace very well, including the woman's champion. Looking at the results after the race, her first loop was slower than mine, and her second loop much much faster (> 5 min differential). She never passed me on the 2nd loop, and I passed her on the 3rd loop, so I can only assume she must have cut the course. That kind of sucked to see. Anyway, I finished the 3rd loop strong and took about 6 minutes off last years time, so I was pretty happy about that! My 5K splits were pretty consistent so mission accomplished there too.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, I feel like I ran a pretty solid race.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, got some food and a can of pop, and waited for Clare to finish. Picked up my AG award, and headed out and back to Waterloo.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

High run volume lately. I've also gained a few pounds since IM Wisconsin so I'm sure that doesn't help.

Event comments:

Such a great and fun fall race! Great organization and swag given the entry fee is pretty low.
