Pre-race routine:

This was Part 1 of Goofy's Challenge, which is the 1/2 marathon Saturday followed by the full marathon Sunday. My wife planned to do both as well, but got some horrible blisters during the half and wisely decided against doing the full. We flew out of Des Moines and got to Orlando pretty late Thursday night, so we both wanted to just get straight to bed when we got there. Magical Express took longer than usual, there was a pretty long wait for the bus to take us to the resort, surprising given the time of day. We stayed at Carribean Beach, first time we had stayed there, and overall it was great, but it was a LONG walk to the room from the hotel check-in area. It was after midnight at that point so we got straight to bed. Got up fairly early Friday and got the packet pickup madness out of the way. It didn't take too long, but there were a lot of people at the ESPN WWOS complex. It's a huge race so not suprised by that. We grabbed some lunch, then just relaxed in the pool and hottub for a while, grabbed early dinner, and got to bed around 8:30. 3 AM came early, I slept decent though and was feeling pretty good. Bus transportation went pretty well, though it took longer than expected because there was a ton of traffic getting to the start. Hit up the port-a-johns, and then walked the half mile or so to the start corrals.
Event warmup:

Pretty much just the walk to the corrals...

Comments:

The goal today was to hold back as much as possible, I wanted to do a really good marathon time, so I wasn't planning on going super hard for this race. For the most part I did that, but still had some issues. Not sure if it was the banking of the roads, but every muscle in my left leg kept getting tight, and by the end of the race both my quads were very sore, which has NEVER happened when running this distance at this pace. I had to stop 4 or 5 times to stretch, so that probably cost a few minutes. Running through the Magic Kingdom and the castle and all was really cool, but the rest of the course was a little boring. Time-wise this was about what I expected to do, but I knew based on how sore I was for some unknown reason day 2 would be tough.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe try to run on flatter sections of the road, but beyond that I'm not sure.
Post race
Warm down:

After I got my medal and picture, I made sure to stretch very thoroughly while I was waiting for my wife to finish. I also got some ice for my quads and had some stuff to eat. After the wife finished, we headed back to the hotel right away.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Muscle soreness/tightness, having to stop to stretch multiple times. Other than that pretty much ran what I expected to.

Event comments:

This was a fun race, with the parks and people in costumes and all, but I think they allow too many participants. The course is a little crowded and the logistics of getting to the race site on time basically force you to get up in the middle of the night. Other than that, it was a blast though!
