Swim
Comments: Not a great swim overall given the strength of the current helping the last 1000 meters. The water temp was measured at 78 so it would have been wetsuit legal, but I left mine in Iowa assuming the water would be too warm. I'm glad I didn't have it anyway because I think I would have overheated with it on. I made several navigation errors that probably added up to a minute or so of time lost. Rounding the buoy to head downstream I underestimated the strength of the current and got carried to far downstream. I had to swim back upstream to make it around the buoy. There was actually a fair amount of chop on the water, which I thought was odd because it's a river and it wasn't windy. What would you do differently?: Navigate better and swim harder... Transition 1
Comments: Nothing to see here, pretty clean transition, just a large transition area. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: Surprised I had the 24th fastest bike split, I wasn't really very happy with this effort. I need to get going on doing some hill work in prep for IM Wisconsin, because my climbing in this race was pretty pathetic. The first time back down the hill I was way too tentative, so there was some time lost there. Second time up the hill I was playing cat and mouse with another rider. Every time I passed him, he would hammer it and go back in front, not sure why. On the second downhill the same rider was sitting out of position to the left the whole way down the hill and would not move over. I finally got around hime and hammered down the rest of the hill and back to transition, never saw him again. What would you do differently?: Not get in pissing match with another rider, climb better... Transition 2
Comments: Pretty happy with this, just had a little trouble getting my left shoe on. My race shoes are just a little too tight so they can be tough to get on quickly. What would you do differently?: Order my next set of race shoes half a size bigger... Run
Comments: Decent run overall, I could have pushed a little harder in the early miles though. With the knee problems I've had this year I just don't trust myself to really go hard. I did finish strong and pass several guys the last 2 miles though. What would you do differently?: Run harder early on... Post race
Warm down: Had some water and a smiley cookie from Eat'n'Park, checked my results and saw how many fast guys showed up and realized I was nowhere close to getting an award, packed up transition and headed back to my mom's house. What limited your ability to perform faster: Travel, lack of fitness Event comments: I had a blast as always, this is my second time doing this event, and I'll probably be back again in the future. The course is great and the race organization is pretty good too! Last updated: 2011-10-24 12:00 AM

I'm originally from Pittsburgh, and still have family and friends there, so I combined a visit with doing this race. I drove in from Iowa Friday, which is about as exciting as it sounds, but the drive was mostly uneventful until my cruise control decided to stop working 2 hrs. away. I've been having knee issues so holding my foot on the gas for that long wasn't ideal. Hung out with family and built some new doors for my mom's shed on Saturday, and got to bed at a decent time for once. Up at 5 AM to drive down to the race site and get set up.
Nothing really, went in cold.
