Overall Rank = 1780/2573
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 302/414
Pre-race routine:

In bed at 8:00 up at 3:53, 7 minutes before the alarm was set. Dressed and quick breakfast and out the door. Double and triple check transition setups, scout lines in and out of transitions and a whole lot of waiting for time to get into the wetsuit.
Event warmup:

Basic stretching.
Swim
  • 51m 42s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 27s / 100 yards
Comments:

First leg of the swim right up the buoy line and was actually passing some people, very odd. After rounding the first turn I got way off to the right and couldn't seem to get back on line until after the second turn, by that time I was debris in the water and in the way of better swimmers.
What would you do differently?:

I've found a masters swimming group and I'm going to start swimming with them. In the past I've looked at the swim as just something to survive so I really need to change my attitude and train for it.
Transition 1
  • 04m 50s
Comments:

Very good T1, slow time was a product of size of transition area and being a clean and bagged in and out. Used the wetsuit strippers, they were great!
What would you do differently?:

Needed to have a towel to clean feet, dirt or rocks stuck to them annoyed me the rest of the day.
Bike
  • 3h 13m 22s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.38 mile/hr
Comments:

On the bike and up to speed very quickly, was difficult early on to find room to pass without drafting. Road surface was absolutely brutal but no flats so what do is there to really complain about?
What would you do differently?:

Did not train enough in aero position. Maintained about a 22 mph for the first hour (excluding hills), then my back muscles began to protest and severely hampered efforts the remainder of the day. Legs felt good, able to put down ample power just couldn't stay in aero to make use of it. Clip on aero bars are not cutting it, must get a Tri-bike.
Transition 2
  • 03m 57s
Comments:

Slow time again attributed to size of transition area. Excellent dismount and able to get running shoes on quickly.
Run
  • 3h 28m 32s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 15m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Run sucked from the bike dismount on. Not prepared to run after a hard bike. For the most part I walked up hills and ran down them, ran about 1/3 of the flats. I felt pretty pathetic walking that much but stopping sure wasn't an option.
What would you do differently?:

Must do more bricks!
Post race
Event comments:

Loved everything about the race I simply wasn't ready. Only negatives were the brutality of the racing surface and and the 1 car on the course.
