Run
Comments: I was going for a 3:45, which would have been a BQ for me. I had done a lot of shorter runs at race pace, so I knew it would be pushing it a little, but I wanted to see what I could do. I started just behind the 3:45 pace group, and stayed with them quite easily. I thought I would stay with them, and then pick up the pace at mile 23 if I still felt good. By mile 3 I started being able to feel my toes and fingers again, and at mile 6 I ditched the gloves and hat. At mile 11, the effort started to feel really, really hard. I knew I wasn't going to be able to hold on until the end. I was on pace until the half marathon point, but then I knew I had to back off, otherwise I wasn't going to be able to finish. By mile 15, my body forced me to back off, and started to slow down further and further. My walks through the aid station got longer and longer, and I saw my pace drop to 9 and then 10 min miles. I was averaging 8:53 by the 30K point, motored through mile 20, but by the last 3 miles it was getting harder and harder to keep running. I think my last 2 miles may have been at 12 min pace. 4:05 is my 3rd fastest marathon time, and I think if I'd paced better earlier on I would have had a PR. But the goal was Boston, and I'm happy that I tried. I also know what I have to do differenly next time. What would you do differently?: Need more miles on my legs before attempting another BQ. This was marathon #9, so I have the experience, I have the speed, I just need to have a longer period of strict run-focused training. My triathlon season ended too close to the marathon this year. Post race
Warm down: Walked to the UPS trucks through the crowds of spectators(which were FAR from the finish), jumped back on the metro and tried to warm up. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of miles Event comments: The marines put on a fantastic race! It's definitely one that everyone should do at least once. Beautiful course, fantastic support, and very inspirational and emotional. The crowds are also wonderful. The only time I felt the effects of running with 30K people was the backup getting in to the Rosslyn metro. Last updated: 2011-10-31 12:00 AM

Up at 4:00, took the metro from Rockville to the Pentagon. Had the usual coffee and honey nut cheerios. Arrived at about 7:00 and spent the next hour trying to stay warm. Because of the cold and wind chill, I spent the next hour shivering.
Tried a brief warmup, but there were so many people, and by the time we got into our corrals, my legs were frozen.
