Pre-race routine:

2:00 am got up drank Insure plus.Went back to bed and slept until 4:15 am. Then I ate some oatmeal, banana, and Insure plus. Looked over the nutrition bags one more time and headed out the door.
Got to T1 about 5:30 topped off speedfil and pumped up the tires. Headed to swim start and realized I forgot to turn on the my athlete tracker so turned around and turned it on. My Head was spinning with did I do this did I do that on the ride over to the swim start. I finally setled down a little bit at the swim start after I was body marked. That is until I realized that I did not have my timing chip. (Did I mention I was a nervous reck) It was in my bag which was with my mother on her way to get the rest of the crew. So it was about a three hour wait for her to make the 2 mile drive over to the hotel and back (or something like that). They returned in plenty of time and I put on my chip and relaxed a little bit.
Event warmup:

I did not do much a little stretching.
Swim
  • 1h 27m 1s

Comments:

Some how I was close to the front line when the gun went off. I got ran over so many times I can't remember them all. The last one I remeber real well because I got kicked so hard in the right goggle it cracked it. The rest of the swim I had to stop and drain my goggle. I settled in about half way out to the first turn bouy. Then when we aproached the first turn it really got cramped up again. Then back down the lake I found some room and was able to stretch out my stroke a little. That did not last long though because we started entering the canal. In the canal I started swimming to the right edge hoping for some room but all I got over there was tangled up with something that cut up my left foot. I have never been so happy to see the exit.
What would you do differently?:

Not be so close to the front.

Comments:

Bike plan was to go out slow and finish strong. Strong being holding atleast the same pace. The first half of the bike was right on schedule. Ten miles in HR right on pace was about 17.9 everything good. I felt like the pace maybe a little to much so I slowed up alittle. 20 and 30 both where perfect HR right on pace was about 17.4 everything was looking good. This went on all the way to the half way point. 56 mile I was around 3:15 wich was just what I wanted. My nutrition was going good. Seen the family at about 75 mile. Then about 80-85 mile I started feeling off. Not sure how to explain it but it was something I had never felt. I was a little dizzy and my left foot started hurting. So I decided to start drinking lots and lots of water. I had to stop and use the rest room at 60 miles so I thought I was drinking plenty. But not sure what was going on I decided to slow down also and take it easy the rest of the way in. The finish was more important than how fast.
What would you do differently?:

I think my nutrition needs to be tuned in a little bit better.
Not sure why I started feeling bad but I think it was nutrition.
I had several training rides over 100 and never had an issue but that was the longest I had rode after that lenght of a swim.

Comments:

The run started like the bike ended. I felt a little bit off and my left foot was hurting bad. I also was having real trouble getting my HR down. So I decided to walk until I got everything under control. I knew I could walk and finish but thats not what I wanted. I ended up walking pretty much the whole first lap. I drank lots of water and preform and ckick broth. Then the last part of the first lap I started feeling better and started run/walking. I did not want to crash so I decided to run/walk a 15 pace for the second lap and if I felt good I would do what I could on the last. On the last lap I was feeling real good my foot was still killing me but everything else was awesome but I was still worried that whatever happend at the end of the bike might comeback. Then after the first aidstation on the last loop I decided that I was going to push all I could between aidstations. That last lap flew by I held under 11 on most of it and when I hit the canal and the finish line was pulling me. I hit single digit pace for that last 2 mile or what ever it was. Then the split the lady there said you have less than half a mile you've made it. The finish chute is like nothing I have ever felt. I high fived as many as I could and when he said you are and IRONMAN... well no word can describe it.
What would you do differently?:

I need to fine tune my nutrition I think.
Post race
Warm down:

not much walked around with the family and reflected on the day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Again I think nutrition.
Mainly I think sodium.

Event comments:

I got my metal and a huge hug from Chrissie Wellington at the finish. Nice finish to my first race.
My family met me at the end off the chute and it was just awesome my son and daughter gave me big hugs and then the emotions started to pour out.
