Swim
Comments: About a third or half of competitors wore wetsuits but I chose not to. Stepped on an underwater jetty before start and cut toe. Started at far left of field and had almost no interference for entire swim. Felt like I was struggling with body balance and breathing and performance was a little better than I thought. Transition 1
Comments: Not used to this rack system and took a few extra seconds to find my bike and stuff. Got location mixed up with another whose stuff looked similar. Legs were very rubbery and had a little trouble putting on my shoes while standing up but had plenty of room and setup was good. What would you do differently?: Make sure to know exact location of bike/stuff better. Bike
Comments: Got very dry huffing and puffing because I was pushing, but was too winded to drink. Speed varied from 17 - 23 mph due to wind. Saddle started slipping (again) so angle was very bad by end of ride and I kept having to push myself up and back onto it. Not sure how much impact that had on performance. What would you do differently?: Have to get seat post fixed (or get a new one) to keep saddle angle from slipping. Transition 2
Run
Comments: Cool temps helped and I ran entire course though it was at my usual molassas-slow pace. For the first mile and a half my feet were slipping around in my wet powdery shoes and stopped to tighten locklaces at one point. Finally dried out and was able to get better traction in my shoes What would you do differently?: Consider putting cloth insole over orthotics in running shoes so they are not so slippery. Gotta learn to run better and train, train, train. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, drank water, ate fruit. What limited your ability to perform faster: Saddle and shoe problems, and a general lack of optimal conditioning. Event comments: Excellent race. Very well-organized. Very nice venue. Plenty of enthusiastic, helpful volunteers. Post race food was the Club Med restaurant breakfast buffet and was REALLY good (but be sure to get there before the restaurant closes). I'll be doing this one again! Stayed at Homewood Suites about 20 min away. Very nice hotel! Up at 4:45 for grits, yogurt, and banana and got to venue at 6:15. Racks were tire slots with pre-assigned numbers - a new experience. Initially my neighbor did not alternate sides so I had no room to access my stuff, but he switched when someone else got their stuff out of the way. Worked out just fine.
Swam for about five minutes.
