Pre-race routine:

Signed up for this race as a tune up and preparation for my first Olympic triathlon in March (SuperSeal). I also wanted to do this especially since this was my very first triathlon that I did last year so I was excited to see how much I have progressed after my first year. I took a month and a half off for my off season as my last race was Sept 18th, during this time I took it easy from my training plan and just relaxed and did more weight lifting. I came up with a Olympic Training plan where I have 10 workouts a week (2x swim, 3x bike, 4x run, and 1x weights) that would start the first week of November.

I got up at 6:00am, it was great to sleep in a bit since the race was at 9:00am, usually in previous races I would be up at 4:00am waking up my poor g/f so early Ate my usual breakfast of toast and eggs and hydrated early. Did my infamous morning bowel routine and double checked my equipment and bag that I packed the night before. Left the apartment with the g/f at 7:10 and got to the Anthem rec center around 7:40.
Event warmup:

Setup my transition area which was right next to the swim exit but pretty far back away from the bike exit. Then I pretty much just hung out and sat in the rec center area waiting for things to get started. Did some light stretching.

Comments:

Lined up in between the 7:30 - 8:00 marker and waited about 10 minutes before it was my time to shine! lol...I started out and felt good the first 200m, I always have some troubles with the diagonal pushoff from the pool since I haven't practiced it or know how to do flip turns. The 2nd set of 200m felt pretty good too as I was able to maintain the same pace and finished strong.
What would you do differently?:

Continue practicing

Comments:

Since my first season of triathlons (all sprints, have done 8), I have realized my bike is my strongest out of the 3 despite not having any background in 3 of the sports. Each of my bike splits have improved with each race and this was no exception. I still have trouble with hills due to my heavier/stockier body frame (5'7 188lbs) and I plan on losing 10-15 lbs before my March olympic tri. The course itself was a bit challenging, especially the 1st and 3rd part of the loop which were all inclines. It was a chilly morning and continued throughout the race and surprisingly the only extremity that was cold were my feet and face, everything else felt fine.
What would you do differently?:

Continue to lose weight by healthier diet and food choices. Also continue to stick to my bike workouts.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 30m 54s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

The run is always my toughest leg of the race. I have focused my training plan to run more and it sure has helped and was evident in my run today. Although I stayed in my usual 30 minute 5k time, I felt pretty good throughout and did not have any oncoming signs of cramping. The middle third of the course was all uphill which I struggled getting any speed in but the last mile I was able to pick up the pace a bit when the course towards the finish line began to flatten out.
What would you do differently?:

Continue to run more and stick to my running routine and workouts.

Event comments:

As a tuneup race, I felt my overall fitness level is better than I thought it would be having just started my official training plan just this past month after taking some time off. I feel my workouts for my training have been somewhat consistent despite the holiday season in full swing and with me going out of town for a few days during Thanksgiving weekend. My biggest struggle and an ongoing challenge is nutrition. I have not always selected the best food options and though I make efforts to eat healthier, I understand having a clean diet and not overeating will allow me to shed these pounds and be lighter for my first olympic triathlon race in March. This time around, I can confidently say I will finish the oly, but try to compete to have a finish time under 3 hours!
