Swim
Comments: I'm a terrible swimmer and was sure I'd get last in my division and maybe overall. I was pumped when I looked back at the half way point and realized I was ahead of a few people. when I got to the finish I was totally stoked. What would you do differently?: nothing Transition 1
Comments: Transition went as well as I could have expected for me. This race has transiton at two locations so you have to load everything into a bag to be taked to finish location. The exit to tranisiton it up a hill, I pushed my bike up the hill(thanks to many race reports here on BT). Several people crashed so it is definalty the way to go. FUNNY STORY: ran up the hill in my bike shoes - that went very well, much faster than those around me, I though WOW I'm a stud!! Went to clip in to pedals could get clipped. WHAT THE HELL? I've mever had this problem. Then I redalized I had my covers on my cleats. Pulled them off put them in my pocket and clipped in and was on my way. What would you do differently?: Take my cleat covers off Bike
Comments: Beaultiful Course!! Probably one of the prettiest rides I've done. Please note: I am from the desert, so anything green is beautiful. Soince this was my 1st half I really held back. I wanted to make sure I could handle the run. What would you do differently?: Push harder Transition 2
Comments: good transition - I was not rushing went ot the bathroom What would you do differently?: nothing Run
Comments: Probably the part of the race that I am least happy with. I definatly could have done better. I trained at 9:30 pace and that what I wanted to do. I walked way more than I needed to. Poor mentalk training on my part. COOL STORY: Caught up to Rhonda a mile 8. Stuck with her for about mile or so. It is great that we did this together. She is a rockstar. What would you do differently?: walk less, run more Next time will be better Post race
Warm down: eat some cookies, drink a soda and wait for the others on my group to finish. I was so cool to see my wife finish. We worked hard or this and all the training paid off. What limited your ability to perform faster: Mental, holding back on the bike. I need to train at faster pace. Event comments: Great Event, great volunteers, very organized. I would definatly reccomend this as a great 1st race: challenging but not crazy, especially for poor swimmers - shallow water boosts confidence. Last updated: 2011-11-21 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:00 ate a cliff builder bar, bowl of oatmeal, gatorade and honey stinger. grabbed gear and headed to Guerneville. We(a group of six,all doing our 1st 70.3) rented a house in Windsor for the week. we had heard that parking was a nightmare so we wanted to get there early. My wife(Rhonda) and Lisa went out at 7:20. Perfect timing for us. Just missed the crowd. Waited for the girls and Rueben to start, I was in second to last wave and Rob was in last wave.
No warm up really(except for two trips to porta potty:) We got to see Rhonda and Lisa come out of the water, it was so cool. Rhonda it great.
I got kinda freaked out at this point. They pulled a lady from the water and started doing chest compressions(she died later at the hospital). This did not help my nerves, reality started sinking in. This was my 1st open water swim in a race. I has swam a number times at a lake and was confident but it still freaked me out.
