Comments:

Wanted to give James a race. Started next to him, but at the start gun, he weaseled his way up a few spots in line and I started behind. The people I then started behind were not very quick, including a guy pushing a stroller.

So, James got away, but not far. Made the first turn and started to lose more ground. Legs were just not fresh, but I'm sure his weren't either. Just worked on maintaining steady pace/effort.

Made the turn to head out of town, and I had thoughts that I knew James was looking to PR as well as race me, so my new goal was to stay close enough to scare him at the turnaround.

Hit the first mile a little over 7 minutes, not my fastest, but my fastest for awhile. Hit the aid station and splashed some cold water on my face. Saw the leaders heading back in. Ryan was out front by about 10". Heard James holler encouragement and wondered how he managed that as I was out of breath.

Hit the turnaround, probably 5-10 seconds behind James, saw him give me a look. I always have a little trouble after the turnaround and James pulled away again.

There was a guy in an orange shirt running close to me the whole race. He wasn't in the best of shape (not that I am either). He became my secondary target. I tried to keep pace and turnover up as we "climbed" the inclines headed into town. I knew I had slowed, but it seemed I was catching up to James.

Made the turn onto Tazewell and tried to increase pace to try to catch James and to put a gap on orange shirt guy. I just don't trust myself to surge and recover, so instead I tend to try to bridge the gap slowly. I put a gap on orange shirt guy. I was catching James, got probably about 5 seconds behind James, but knew I didn't have a kick left and James started his around the last turn.

I didn't get to him, but did eat into his 15 second gap over me 2 weeks ago.
What would you do differently?:

Someday I'll lose some weight and do some speedwork and become a runner again.
Post race
Warm down:

47 mile bike ride :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weight, lack of running, lack of interval running, lack of trust in myself to surge

Event comments:

Home town race. Love it.
