Swim
Comments: felt great on the swim, to my complete surprise it ended up being my favorite leg of the race. Got a little bottle necked at times with up and back in lanes making it a bit tricky to pass. I passed 3 or 4 people (major confidence booster!) and got passed once. It went by in a blink of an eye and I felt on top of the world coming out of the pool - huge adrenaline rush! What would you do differently?: nothing, I am happy with how things went considering this was my first Sprint Tri Transition 1
Comments: not too bad with my first transition ever. My shoe heel got stuck so I had to take a few seconds to get my shoe on correctly. Bike
Comments: My bike was malfunctioning from the get go and being such a newbie I couldn't figure out what was happening, I was stuck in 6th gear, wheels were spinning in all other gears (I've since learned the problem) So, I literally thought I as going to have to stop and not race, but I told myself no matter what I'm getting it done. So, I trucked along in 6th gear and finished. I have what I'd call a 'beach comber' bike to begin with so add the gear issue I was passed a gazillion times, but everyone was very encouraging and I just went with my mantra of "this is where the healing begins" (from a song) since this was my comeback to being active after 10 years of being told I can't b/c of a degenerative disease in my back. That kept me going! What would you do differently?: Learn how to manage bike issues LOL! Transition 2
Comments: Transition went smoothly, happy with it! Grabbed my race belt and off I went! In time I will get faster at racking bike as I initially went at the rack in the wrong direction so I had to turn my bike around, however, it was a quick fix. For my first time, I didn't care : ) What would you do differently?: Remember which way my bike needs to be as I approach my rack. Run
Comments: I was happy with my performance as I had been in physical therapy for some issues related to my hips/back therefore for about 6 weeks I wasn't running until about 3 weeks before the race. Considering my lack of run training, I was shooting for an 11 min/mile and I beat that, to my surprise. So, though not where I had hoped to be when I signed up for this Tri, I was very pleased with how it worked out considering my lack of training. What would you do differently?: I would probably push even harder, but not having been able to fully train, I kept at a comfortable push and just went with my goal to run the entire 3.1 miles and feel good as I crossed the finish line. Goal attained : ) Post race
Warm down: walking, stretching, water What limited your ability to perform faster: Having to cut out run training for 5 weeks in the last 8 weeks before this event. My bike mechanical (and user error LOL) issues. Event comments: I loved this Tri, friendly athletes and volunteers, great staff and events ran on time. Easy course for a Tri newby - short pool swim, flat bike and run. I was in the novice division with 18 female novice racers. Swim rank: 6/18, bike rank 18/18 (shoot me now LOL!), run rank: 10/18 = overall rank: 17/18. Bike brought me down, but hey, my goal was to not come in dead last overall and I didn't! Ate rice cake with peanut butter and a banana and water for breakfast. Ate a few bites of a protein bar and water about 1 hour before race and my go to spoon full of peanut butter about 15 minutes before race.
