Pre-race routine:

Got gear together the night before. Used cycle jersey b/c pockets for test meter and sugar supply.
Awoke around 0530. Took hot bath tto warm up muscles. Light stretches. Banana and water for breakfast.
Arrived @ Red Arrow Park @ 0720.
Event warmup:

Light stretches, hydration. Tested BGL: 165. Socialized with other family members in the race.

Comments:

I had 2 goals for this race: 1. Start 2. Finish. I accomplished them both. Nice run with hills mixed in. Route was cordoned off and intersections controlled. Lake run was pleasant. Not much wind but was quite chilly at the start. Slow and easy pace to start but around 1/2 mile in legged a bit faster pace. Breathing cadence strong and even. Stopped at mile 2 to stretch left calf which started to cramp. Stopped 1 additional time to stretch again. Really tight! Right knee was sore but pulled me through to the end. Right hip presented little problems. Legged out a nice sprint at the end to finish strong.
What would you do differently?:

More stretching.

Warm down:

Walk and stretch. Ice on right knee. Hydration. Test BGL: 108!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Right knee and the sudden cramp in my left calf.

Event comments:

By the time we laggers got in to the finish the hydration station was out of water/gatorade. Had bananas and granola bars in plenty however. Starting strip malfunctioned so all of the 5 milers had to funnel through a narrow passage on the left side of the starting gate. Route well marked with many volunteers. I was surprised by the lack of locals out cheering. There were some and I appreciated them all. It's nice to 'socialize' on the way through and to have them give encouragement!
