Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4AM. Had breakfast and drove to transition.
Event warmup:

Ran a bit with some accelerations to get the HR up and loosen the legs.
Swim
  • 14m 21s
  • 1094 yards
  • 01m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was a good swim for me. Usually my worst event. Got off fairly well. did not have much contact at all. Just focused on relaxing and keeping the stroke long and powerful. Conditions mirrored the pool so it made it easier than some of the open water swims.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. Become a better swimmer.
Transition 1
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

Still a work in progress but I'm slowly improving. Learning to do the flying mount with shoes clipped in might help.
What would you do differently?:

Practice with shoes clipped in.
Bike
  • 48m 29s
  • 18.64 miles
  • 23.07 mile/hr
Comments:

Not happy with this bike. Usually a good event for me but this time it felt much less so! I tried to keep my cadence up to avoid mashing, especially on the climb. Perhaps I went to easy on the gearing and gave up speed...not sure.
What would you do differently?:

Try to keep one gear harder and get cadence down to 90 or so to see if it gains me any speed.
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

About average is all I can say. I don't practice transitions and it could save me some valuable seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Practice it more to become efficient.
Run
  • 42m 28s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Run felt hard. My lack of run training since Oceanside as I tended to my injured calf showed today. Was hoping for a faster pace overall but could only keep it for 3-4 miles...then I had to slow down.
What would you do differently?:

Train more.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with the rest of the team as they came in. Stretched a bit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I am not fit enough on the bike and run. I will address this in the coming weeks/months. As far as the swim the frequency and consistency at Masters paid off. Will keep that up and hope for better times in the future.

Event comments:

This is a fun race. The swim feels like a pool - no chop or current. I love any bike ride that goes up that hill and gives such views of the Pacific and SD. The run is so flat that it really allows you to stretch your legs and keep a good turnover and speed. My first time but I am already looking forward to next year.
