Run
Comments: Much has been written about the poor planning of this race, particularly in both corral assignment (we had faster runner friends assigned way behind us) and enforcement (we had walkers starting in front of us in corral 9). I had planned to be sub-2 for this and was pacing a friend toward that goal, but the congestion for the first 3-4 miles kept me from getting up to the needed pace. Things finally cleared up around miles 6 and 7, but by then the effort required to make up the lost ground was too much and I had to cut it back. I did enough calculations by the 10-11 mile point to know I wouldn't hit 2, and coasted the last few miles while enjoying the strip. What would you do differently?: Not sign up for this race. RnR charged double the going rate for most other HM's and failed to provide the premium product I expected. Not worth the money and I don't plan on doing any more RnR events, ever. Also, knowing at the start that my time was screwed, I would have hung out with my wife and running club friend that I did the first 3 miles with, rather than trying in vain to catch up to my goal. Post race
Event comments: A horribly managed race by RnR. Too many people, no corral enforcement, corrals were rushed out onto the course without giving them a chance to thin out. Finish line was a fiasco, photos were creating a bottleneck which stretched back to (and over) the finish line. Later on, for the slower runners/walkers, they ran out of finisher medals!!! 44,000 registered, $6 million in cash, and they can't provide enough medals? Pathetic, RnR. Since my wife and I were both running this we had to line up a babysitter, and left our house 2.5 hours pre-race arriving in the area 2 hours pre-race. Traffic was already gridlocked and it took us up to barely over an hour before we had a spot and were hurrying through the hotel to a friends' room to stash our stuff and head for the start. The mass chaos in the starting area made it hard to get to our corral, and I cut my knee on some of the native foliage.... still have the blood on my shoe! Arrived in corral 10 minutes before start, so not really a chance of any routine...
Kept warm by being packed in like sardines with thousands of other runners.
