Pre-race routine:

Didn't sleep too well the night before; I was way too excited about this race! Found myself staring at the clock waiting for it to go off so I could get up and go. Ate breakfast of oatmeal and fruit, out the door shortly after with a banana for later.
Event warmup:

Herein lies the real problem with the day; my wave was at 7:20, transition closed at 6:05. I had nearly an hour and a half between my warmup and the time I started the race. That might explain the cramping. Either way, it consisted of ~1 mile of running, lots of dynamic stretches, and about 300-400m of swimming.

Comments:

I was really happy with this swim. The weirdest part was starting in the last wave. Usually, after the first couple hundred meters it spreads out and you don't have to worry about other swimmers as much. This was not the case here. About every 200m or so, I would catch another pack of swimmers and have to navigate around them. All in all, it made me feel incredibly fast since by the end I was passing people that started 20 min before me!
At the end of the swim when I attempted to stand to run out of the water (notice the "attempted") my calf locked up on me. This was probably one of the worst cramps I have ever felt! It literally crippled me and caused me to fall forward onto my face in the shallow water. I had to roll onto my back and massage my calf for a minute or 2 until it loosened up enough for me to stand and walk out. This was really strange since I have never had this happen to me before.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Transition 1
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

Transition was really fast actually, most of the time I spent in transition was due to the fact that it was nearly a quarter mile from one end to the other!
Everybody did get a little clogged up at the bike mount line but I managed to find a gap and run through without having to slow down or stop so I was pretty happy with that part.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.

Comments:

So much fun on this ride! The hills were tought but there were people along the course cheering us along the whole way. There was an aid station at the top of the steepest part of the climb which was awesome! The downhill was incredible and I even managed to top 40mph each time down; what a rush!
There was an aid station on the bike course at the top of the steepest part of the climb with both Gatoraide and water which was fantastic! Some parts of the ride had some pretty rough roads to deal with but that isn't the fault of the race directors. San Diego has notoriously bad roads!
What would you do differently?:

More hill training on the bike. I was happy with my performance but I would have had more speed in me for the uphill parts.
Transition 2
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Managed to lose my Bodyglide before the race and it was missed! I could have used some on the shoes since they got stuck on my sweaty feet. Not too big of a deal though, only a couple of seconds lost.
What would you do differently?:

Not lose my Bodyglide!
Run
  • 46m 31s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty good run overall. I didn't feel as strong as I had hoped going into the run since the bike was so hard, but I managed to maintain a pretty good pace. My quads started cramping pretty bad on the second loop but I managed to push through. Lots of great people on the course cheering us on and the finish line area was packed with people along the course and in the stands at the finish. Made me feel like a pro!
What would you do differently?:

I would have liked to have more left at the end for the final sprint. Not like that would have made much of a difference in my time but I like to finish strong.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much, some stretching, lots of walking, and a 5 mile bike ride back to my truck. They forgot to mention (or I forgot to listen) that bikes were not allowed on thd shuttles back to the parking lots.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The hills. It seems like this is a common complaint for me. You would hope that I could learn from this and start riding more hill repeats!

Event comments:

What a great race! I had a blast and the expo, volunteers, sponsors, cheering locals, and other racers made the event the best one around! There was a little confusion leading up to the race since the final details weren't sent out until the week of the race, but what can you expect when trying to shut down one of the busiest parts of town on a perfect spring day?! The organization was fantastic, the bike course was great, traffic control was top notch, and the finish was amazing. Running down that blue carpet between the grandstands to cross the line was one of the coolest things I have done! I hope this race becomes an annual event, they can mark me down as a permanent fixture here!!!

Course: Kind of an "L" shaped course; 1 left turn, 3 rights. After the first turn we headed out into the bay from the protected little cove we started in. There were a few small swells out there, enough to go over my head when I turned to take a breath. Nothing too terrible though.

Course: Awesome course, but man was it a tough one! Miles 3 through 7 were uphill, with one section that was well over 10% gradient (I'm not sure of the exact slope, but it was steep)! Having to go up that hill twice was brutal, but the downhill was worth it!
