Pre-race routine:

I was wondering why I got cramps this race, and I found out why while discussing the entire day and yesterday's activities with my friend. For AMICA and Nathan's, I drank 5-6 bottles of water the day before. This race? Bowl of soup, a cup of fruits and half a cup of water were all I had for hydration yesterday... Pretty big difference. Bad difference. DRINK WATER or dehydrate!

Woke up at 5AM and great news: barely any pain in my left foot and the bruised lung felt ok. Did the regular routine. Serving of oatmeal, banana and cup of water. Watched some TV. A bit too much. Had to pack things in a hurry and was really rushed. Start to a 'bleh' race. Met up with a friend and drove to Anthem together.
Event warmup:

I have no idea what it was, but everything was so rushed. Or I made it feel like everything was. Setting up transition, imagining T1, etc., everything was racing.

Stretched and tried to "cool down". Weather was freezing. Ate a Honey Stinger Waffle and went into the 7:00min line for the pool swim.
Swim
  • 07m 53s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was weird~ I had never bothered practicing "snake" in the pool. Several times, I didn't get a good launch off the wall. Sometimes I didn't even launch off the wall. Bleh.

I'm glad I took the advice of a teammate and overestimated my swim time. I was only passed by two and passed three or four. Having people all around me was a great motivator too. Last 25m, I pushed it hard.
What would you do differently?:

Practice the diagonal launch.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Tri top got all caught up on my body when I tried to slip it on. Panic = slow T1.
What would you do differently?:

I know I could've done this so much faster. I think my wetsuit AMICA one was barely slower than this one. Just swim with the top on next time.
Bike
  • 38m 42s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 19.27 mile/hr
Comments:

This time includes T1.

1st lap - Legs just weren't functioning well. Took the turn on Daisy Mountain a bit too sharp in aero, close call.

2nd lap - Legs were beginning to loosen up, but midway through at the turn on DM, started getting sharp cramps in my abdominal. Tried to breathe it out and that was a mistake. Almost threw up (bile in throat).

3rd lap - Cramps went away, and I finally got up to speed. Stood up to get past the incline in front of the community center. Lots of people started cheering :) Passing people left and right.
What would you do differently?:

I have no idea how to change the outcome of the first lap, except practice S->B bricks?

Drink more water the previous day.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Putting on socks were an issue like AMICA. Numb feet + puddle of water from T1 = Caught socks. I was also halfway out of transition and forgot to put on my race belt. Turned around (Do I really need this number???) and put it on. Panic and frustration for this transition.
What would you do differently?:

Towel dry feet first next time. Should warm and dry my feet. Don't forget the race belt!
Run
  • 25m 57s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

About a half mile in, I started getting cramps in my abdominal again. By the time I got to a mile, it was getting very obvious (3 out of 5). On the incline - 4 + muscle spasms in my right outside shin area. Decline - 4.99999999999. Finish - Might as well almost have had an appendix burst haha.

The only things keeping me going were: Thoughts of cousin and two men that were slightly faster than me (pacers; kept me going at a okay pace). By the time I got to the decline, 5 people had passed me and this was turning into a "Get this race over with!". Tough day for the run.

*EDIT - I just found out one of those pacers were in my AG, and he got to the finish line 9 seconds before me! AGHHHH! Ha~
What would you do differently?:

Drink more water the previous day.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretch + orange.

I knew, at that moment, without a doubt, "I could have done much better than this". (Too many commas)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Water intake the previous day. I think the dehydration wreaked havoc this race. From the cramps to almost throwing up. I've learned my lesson!

Event comments:

All personal stuff aside, this was a great race. Lots of teammates and great staff. Police were exceptional too. I would do this one again.

Onto next season!
