Pre-race routine:

Race didn't start until 10:30am so tested out a new breakfast--oatmeal, a fried egg and 1/3 banana. Was totally reluctant to eat that banana, but it seemed to work well.
Event warmup:

Typical 15' of run, drills and strides. 1/2 gel 20" before the start.
Run

Comments:

This was my 6th 10K since IM MOO and I wanted to make it the best effort. I have a tendency to not push hard enough, especially those last 2m and I was determined to give it my all this time around.

It was cold and really windy, especially around the Lake. Goal was to turn on the GPS and never look at it.

This is a tough hilly course, but my coach gave me a plan going into it and I felt like I stuck to it. Medium to hard the first mile and then building to very hard at the top of the Cat 5 climb at the 3m mark. That hill was similar to what I experience in the Baraboo hills and it totally kicked my a$$. I went up it hard, but controlled and was gassed at the top--wondered if it was too hard, but too late to worry about that (post analysis it yielded a 7:49 pace which was not great and blew my time goal). I continued to hold that very hard feeling until the 5m mark and then opened it up with what I had left (which looking at the data wasn't much). I made the final turn into the blast of wind and I seriously thought I was going to pass out that last .5m. It was like the world was getting dim. My head was screaming at me to quit, but I just kept pushing weaving in and out of the 5k'ers glad I was passing someone. I wanted to catch the guy ahead of me (tip from Twin), but I couldn't do it. I've never felt so bad in any race, including both MOOs.

Crossed the line, no puke, but in retrospect I don't think there was a place that I could have gone harder. Time was the best I had in all my 10ks (course was tougher than the last one), but :23-:30 slower than I had hoped for. GPS was 46:23, race 46:30.

What would you do differently?:

Really not sure. My HR would suggest I had more to give (basically at LT or slightly above the whole time), but my body wouldn't respond.
Post race
Warm down:

3' walk, 5' ez run, grabbed some H20, Didn't stick around for the awards: #1 45-49, #2: 40-49. I was a popsicle and the wind was still blowing like crazy.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Ability to rise above immense pain that last .5m and push harder and to some extent my lack of any speedwork since doing IM the last two years.

Event comments:

This is the first time I've done this race. I thought it was well run and I'll do it again nexty ear.
