Swim
Comments: Started 50 minutes after the first wave so after battling it out with the other old men we had all the other slower swimmers from the waves in front to contend with. Drafted off a few guys but then lost them, and it was hard to find someone to draft off of once we started swimming thru the earlier waves. I kept veering left into the bouys so I started sighting every 3 full strokes. <35:00 was my goal so I wasn't too far off. What would you do differently?: Learn to swim properly, practice drafting more. Transition 1
Comments: Quick stop to wetsuit strippers with no problem. Made it thru transition problem free, decided to go with shoes clipped into pedals so did not screw with cycling shoes until in cycle portion. What would you do differently?: Run around the slower people coming out of the water Bike
Comments: This was my first HIM so my goal was to beat 20 MPH ave. HR was high zone 4 coming out of transition so took it easy for first 5 miles to let it settle down. Still having issues getting feet into shoes quickly but this probably helped get HR down. Electronics nightmare. Cateye speed sensor was irratic then stop reading speed at mile 10 (I must have messed up the magnet swapping out my trainer tire. Then my garmin 910XT turned itself off about mile 20 so I had no idea how much I missed before I got it turned back on. Just pushed the rest of the way in Zone 3. After mile 20 my muscular endurance became the limiter as I wanted to push HR into upper zone 3 but legs would not go there. First use of Perpetuem for one bottle nutrition and it went fine. Ended up going thru three loads of water in the aerobar water bottle. What would you do differently?: 1) make sure wheel magnet is aligned properly. 2) push HR higher once I achieve better muscular endurance. Transition 2
Comments: Went with socks due to previous rubbing issues with Gel Noosas in bare feet. Took it easy to make sure I didn't forget anything. Run
Comments: Disaster. I was hoping to tun 7:20 pace which I was able to do for the first 3 miles then my feet started killing me where the toes come into the balls of the feet. I had run about 20 miles in the Gel Noosa's prior to this race and had no issues. Between the foot pain and the heat my pace slowed considerably. Stopped and walked at aid stations at mile 6, 9 and 11. One gu at mile 3 another at 8 plus a two half bananas and some coke along the way. What would you do differently?: For this distance I need to stick with the marathon shoes and take the hit in T2 to lace them up. Post race
Warm down: Hung out with Kim and Amanda then Found Frank and Roberto in beer/food tent. Line was too long for a massage and did not stretch after. What limited your ability to perform faster: Muscular endurance on bike, need to keep working on tempo and sweet spot interval training. Poor choice in running equipment. Event comments: Everything professionally done. Nice expo. Post race food was lame being just pizza, bagels, sodas and Ultra beer. Last updated: 2011-12-07 12:00 AM
