Swim
Comments: I heard most people hated the swim b/c it was so rough, but I actually felt really good in the water...I was never cold, I never panicked when I first jumped in, like I normally do, and I even passed some people in the wave before me. I'm sure having a wetsuit helped my performance a lot, but it was still a challenging swim, with big waves that pushed you forward and then sucked you backward. By the time I got outta the water, I felt like I had been swimming for like 50 minutes. I was very pleased to see that it didn't take me that long. I felt strong going into T1. What would you do differently?: Hope for calmer waters! Transition 1
Comments: Okay, I will admit both my transitions SUCKED. I don't know why I am so slow. Ok, yeah I do- I didn't practice at all before the race. First off, when I was running my bike through transition, I realized I forgot my gels! So I had to lean my bike against a rack and run back to my area to get the gels. Then, I had decided to clip my shoes onto my bike, so I had a little trouble getting my feet in the pedals, especially since the beginning of the bike was on a cobblestone road. What would you do differently?: Do some practice transitioning so I am better prepared Bike
Comments: I felt really strong on the bike, aside from the times when we were biking into the wind. But, since I train in 15-20 mph wind regularly, I felt ok in the conditions. The first half of the bike I was going like 20-21 mph and felt awesome, then the wind hit, and I was going 17-18, and my legs were getting tired. I started to get worried about the run. I knew my legs were gonna feel slooooow. What would you do differently?: Bike lots :) Transition 2
Comments: As I mentioned before, I am a slow transitioner. :) Sat down on the ground to get my shoes on. Oh yeah, and my bike helmet got stuck in my hair!! I spent a good 20 secs trying not to rip my hair off my scalp. Ugh. Run
Comments: I knew this was going to be my worst performance out of the three for several reasons: 1. my piriformis injury 2. my lack of bricks (didn't want to run before race b/c of injury) 3. I didn't drink enough on the bike ( i only finished 1 1/2 water bottles instead of the full 2) I struggled on the run- alot. I also had to pee really bad. I hadn't gone since I woke up in the hotel at 5 a.m. I tried to pee on myself (as disgusting as that sounds) when I was walking through one of the aid stations), but I just couldn't. Performance anxiety I guess. :) Wendi, you'll have to explain to me how you do it so effortlessly! Anyways, I started getting really hot and getting goosebumps, so I knew I was really thirsty. Maybe next time I should carry a H20 bottle w/ me. I didn't eat anything on the run. I usually can't stomach anything when I'm running. I pretty much got passed by everybody, but I just focused on moving forward. I really, really wanted to go 3 hours for this race. I saw Mike, Sue, Renee, Christine, Sharon, Bob, Rich (thanks for the high five), and Ron during the run. What would you do differently?: Not be injured. Run lots Post race
Warm down: Finally got to PEE!!! Best feeling ever. :) Then, laid down in the grass to catch my breath and went to find Barry. Made him get me a gatorade. The line for the food was super long, and we had to be outta the hotel by 1 pm, so we had to quickly get to the car so we could go take a shower before checking out. He failed to mention the car was like 2 miles away. It was the longest walk ever. As soon as I sat down, my toes started cramping. I couldn't get them to stop. It was such horrible pain. I was screaming and crying in the street. I must have been a sight. Anyways, it finally stopped and we made it to the hotel in time. What limited your ability to perform faster: Injuries, lack of mental game, lack of bricks Event comments: I really enjoyed meeting everyone this weekend. :) Let's do this again soon! I actually had a really decent night's sleep, unlike Saturday night. For some reason I could NOT go to sleep that night, I think the food I had at TooJay's didn't sit so good w/ me. :( Anyways, woke up at 5 a.m. and Barry and I were downstairs eating our breakfast. I had a bagel w/ cream cheese and a glass of choc. milk. Got to race site a little after 6 a.m. I actually got a little choked up walking to the body marking area. I just thought about how much hard work I've put into my training and I really wanted to do well in this race...man if I get this emotional over an oly race, I can't wait to see what happens at a 1/2 IM next year. :)
Got to my bike rack and thanked god my tires weren't flat or anything. Layed everything out and turned out my bike was next to Laura's (LauraLee). Once I was satisfied w/ how everything was organized in my area, I put on my wetsuit and walked to the swim start.
No real warm up...I saw Jeff, Karl and his sister, Rick, Rich, Christine, Wendi, Renee, Sue, Ron. Chatted for a bit and finally Barry found me to give me a good luck kiss and then before I knew it they yelled "green caps in the chute!" I didn't even get a chance to get in the water to get wet. Oops. I wasn't too worried b/c on Saturday I swam in the bay for about 20 minutes w/ some other BTers to familiarize myself. Let me tell ya'll, the water was choppy!!
