Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:45 ate breakfast and headed to transition. This is an early race so there was not much time to get set up, marked and warm-up.
Event warmup:

Quick run with some strides and accelerations to get the body warm.
Swim
  • 25m
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim is still a mystery to me as far as why I perform some days and not others. Compared to the last Olympic (1,000m swim only) this was 12 sec/100yds slower but I felt a similar exertion level. Some contact as we caught some earlier waves, especially rounding buoys but overall little or no contact.
What would you do differently?:

Go harder I guess. Effort felt right but it turned out to be not good eough.
Transition 1
  • 02m 4s
Comments:

I finally got the hang of removing the wetsuit in an efficient manner and now I forgot where my bike was. Stumbled around for 30 sec or so until I recognized another competitor from the pre-race racking and finally found my bike.
What would you do differently?:

REMEMBER WHERE MY BIKE IS AND GO THERE!!
Bike
  • 1h 06m 21s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 22.47 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike felt ok. Felt good on the climb and there was plenty of time to recover on the downhill. I guess you can always go harder but that was all my legs had today.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure, perhaps meter out power more evenly.
Transition 2
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

Today was NOT a transition day. As I put my shoes on I noticed my chip was gone. As I saw it as I took my feet out of the shoes approaching T2 I knew it was close. Spent 10-20 seconds looking for it and finally spotted it stuck to the velcro of my right bike shoe on the pedal. Put it back on and went
What would you do differently?:

Not remove the chip.
Run
  • 45m 3s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

Definitely not he run I was looking for. Last Oly in June went 6:50 pace and was hoping to improve but instead fell apart. Just kept chugging to the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure, my legs just were not there.
Post race
Warm down:

drink/food tent and rehydrate.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think being 10 weeks out from Ironman and the accompanying volume of training at slower pace had an impact on my ability to hit Olympic distance speed, especially on the run. Was happy with the performance in spite of all that.

Event comments:

I like this race a lot. Looking forward to next year already
