Swim
Comments: Good swim. Nothing to really talk about here. Just went out of the gate to the right and about the third row back. Took it easy for the first 200 meters, then picked it up a little bit throughout the race. A bit of contact at the beginning and then a few other bits of contact, but everything went fairly well. What would you do differently?: Get more efficient with my stroke. Transition 1
Comments: Came out of the water strong. Ran to my bike, wetsuit off, fiddled with the GPS a bit to get it on, then glasses, helmet and off. We had to jog with the bike quite a bit to get to the mount line. Wasn't too happy with that. In fact I think that the mount line was about 100yds on the other side of the timing mat, so my transition looked fast, but my bike was slowed down a bit. What would you do differently?: Nothing really. Bike
Comments: A good bike ride. It took a while for my HR to come down. It was in the 170 range for about 12 minutes then it was in the 160s for a while. I like to be in the low 150s on the bike, but it took till half way through the first lap to get it down. Some annoying biking on the first lap where people didn't want to get passed, would speed up, after passing them, they would sprint to pass me again and slow down. played that game for about 10 minutes then just got past those two guys. I was going at a good clip compared to my normal and thought I would pay for it on the run, but I didn't. What would you do differently?: Maybe more speed training. Transition 2
Comments: Kid were rooting me on in transition as I arrived. Put my bike away, put my socks and shoes on and took off. Nothing special here. Run
Comments: I do not like this run course. Way too many opportunities to roll an ankle. The trail up on the dam wasn't too bad, but the last mile through that trail was a bit more difficult, but survivable. I went out fairly slow. But picked it up into a comfortable pace. Started getting pretty hot the last 2 miles, HR went up the whole time. Started out in the 150s, ended in the 170s and I was taking it pretty slow for the last half mile. What would you do differently?: I am about three weeks into a HR/time based marathon training plan. Longer distance coupled with speedwork should give me a better chance to run faster by controlling my HR. Post race
Warm down: Not much, went and greeted the family, grabbed some food, then packed up my stuff. What limited your ability to perform faster: Can't think of too much. This was a great race for me. I probably need to invest more time in improving my run. If I can maintain my bike and pick up my run pace, I may actually be able to break 2:20 in an Olympic. I will probably be able to do that anyway in my race in two weeks because of the current in the Hudson, but that will feel like cheating. Event comments: A good race. Not a big fan of the running route with the trails, but not sure what other options you have at Alum Creek. When I went to get my timing chip, it was taken, so I had a bit of a panic attack. They gave me a different chip and I thought for sure my results would be messed up, but they came out perfectly. So I was impressed with that. I was one of the last ones to pick up my chip because the line was so long, I decided to come back later after I set up transition. They could probably do a better job with staffing that table. Other than that, it was well organized and a good local race. Last updated: 2011-12-15 12:00 AM

I was treating this more like a training race, but with the family coming, I had to put forth a good effort. Up at 5:25. Wife/Kids/Dog wanted to come to the race, so I waited a little later than I would have like to leave. Had Special K Bar and protein shake to make sure I had something 2 hours before the race. Grabbed a cup of coffee for the drive.
Got there around 6:10. Line for timing chips was insane, so I went straight to transition to set up and planned to come back later for the timing chip.
Set up my TA, took the bike for a spin to make sure everything was working. Went to get my timing chip and #37 was missing. Great. They tried to figure out what to do and ended up giving me a different number and I was surprised that my time was caught. Great job by the timing people.
Anyway, after getting everything taken care or went for a brief swim to warm up.
Brief warm up swim.
