Swim
Comments: Given that this was my first OWS in five months, I played it conservatively and stuck to unilateral breathing. It started pouring halfway through, but I was in the water so I didn't mind. I was thrilled to see that I finished under 30 minutes, although I heard someone comment afterward that the swim had seemed short. My 910xt registered 0.81M, so perhaps they were right... What would you do differently?: I'll work on OWS bilateral breathing once Walden warms up! Transition 1
Comments: After the swim, we had to run up a windy path for a while that was very bumpy and hurt my feet. This is the main reason why my T1 time seems ridiculously high... What would you do differently?: Not too much, although I should practice putting on my aero helmet since that took me a couple of tries! ;) Bike
Comments: Used a rental bike, so fit was passable, but not optimal. Unlike the swim, my Garmin and other people mentioned the course being long, so I may have averaged 18.2 mph over 25.6M, but who's counting? ;) The first half felt great, although the turnaround was very confusing, as it was a guy just standing there yelling at us to double back. No signs, no cones or anything! I actually came to a complete stop because of the confusion. Heading back, there was a 10 mph headwind and we got poured on for a while, so it slowed me down, but I just tried to push through it. What would you do differently?: Train more. I was happy with this performance given that it's March, but I'm definitely not in peak shape! Transition 2
Comments: Unlike T1, T2 was pretty straightforward. Used my new tri shoes without socks, so it was a quick jump to swap and head out on the run! What would you do differently?: Would like to learn the flying dismount, but otherwise nothing... Run
Comments: A bit over a mile into the run, I realized I didn't feel my timing chip. Looked down and it was gone! It was a flimsy strap, so I figured it fell off when I took off my wetsuit, which was the case. Was kind of bummed when I realized I wasn't going to get official splits, but at least I had my 910xt! Pace wasn't great, but not surprising since I'm not in great shape now. What would you do differently?: Will be increasing my weekly mileage heading into the local tri season... Post race
Warm down: Had some water and a banana, and packed up transition. Changed into dry clothes since I was still soaked from getting rained on during the bike. What limited your ability to perform faster: Being lazy all winter! ;) Event comments: Not the most organized race I've done, but fine for a season warmup... Last updated: 2011-12-19 12:00 AM

Woke up at 5:30 to get ready to head out by 6:00. Had a banana and water on the drive over. Set up in transition in the dark, then had to stick around for almost an hour before my swim start. It had been raining on the way over, but had stopped by the start. I thought it had passed, but I was definitely wrong!
None, I just hung around and got suited up for the swim...
