Swim
Comments: heh.. what can I say. It was tough. Conditions were rough. I'm glad I got to experience them for sure, but I could have done without drinking all the sea water. I'm a right side breather, every stroke. The right side was into the waves. I had my fill of the bay.. oddly, that got me thinking that I might be OVER doing it in the salt department. A thought that did not leave my mind the rest of the race. I was concerned about taking in more salt through my own drinking. There is such a thing as too little, and too much salt. I need to tresearch the effect of sea water on this situation. What would you do differently?: Nothing. The swim is my weak event. I did as well as I could have at this point all things considered. Transition 1
Comments: Transition went better than expected considering that it was my first wetsuit removal in race conditions.. in any conditions other than trying it on for the first time. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I'd like to chip away at some of this time. I need to see where I can do that. I'm not really sure I can. Bike
Comments: I had a decent bike. A strange thing occured though and I wonder if it affected my time at all.. I mean maybe only seconds, but it is possible. Apparently my Aero bottle sits a little too low on my new setup. Somewhere in the first 10 miles, I felt this stream of wetness on my leg. Thought I ran through a puddle or something until it didn't go away as expected. I looked down and a blue stream was flowing freely from the base of my aero bottle. My bottle was empty within a minute. I burned a hole into the base of the aero bottle. Not a slight one either. I'll take a picture and post it. This had a absolutely negative effect on my braking. It eliminated the typical friction as the surface was coated with multiple layers of drying gatorade. The first time I went to brake after the leak, I nearly flipped over. The break grabbed instead of slid. I thought I had a mechanical failure until I worked this out in my head a few minutes later. From that point, I was rear braking only. All this may have cost me, but in the end, I think I had a good performance. Take the wind away and I think I could have averaged 21 / 22 easily. My high speed was 29mph on a flat course. What would you do differently?: umm.. where do I start with the aero bottle part. Other than that, just continue to get better. Transition 2
Comments: I gave a lot to my bike performance. My legs were a bit weak jumping off the bike. I'm not totally unhappy with this T2 time considering the size of transition. What would you do differently?: Not sure. This vary's by race. Run
Comments: I was better here than past olympic distance tri's, but I can improve this still. I was having breathing issues through to mile 3. Not sure why, just felt like I could not take a deep breath, which in turn took me out of my comfort zone. What would you do differently?: Understand how the swim and bike relates to my run. Running is my strong poing. It's what I know best. I need to learn how to optimize my race to feature that. Post race
Warm down: Drank 3 very cold and welcome beers with Jimmy while waiting on my wife and another friend from Atlanta to finish. What limited your ability to perform faster: High winds and Aero bottle issues on the bike, High surf on the swim, and not sure about the run. My time was 2:46:58. I am absolutely confident that I could have been sub 2:43, possibly 2:40 under the right circumstances. That is not to place blame on anything. I had a great race for me and I know it. I also know I can do better, and that is a good feeling. Event comments: St. Anthony's is a fantastic race. Very well done. This is my olympic distance PR. additional notes: Leslie finished in 3:02:03(PR), Jimmy rocked this race and finished in 2:45:10(PR), and Lorna finished in 3:00:00(PR).. on the button. Simple. Woke up at 4:15, got dressed, headed to the car and drove to the race. Race site was about 35 miles away from my Brother in laws house in Brandon. Easy drive in, easy parking. I was totally nervous. My wife was competing in this event as well. We didn't say much on the drive in. I was playing some great techno from sirius channel Area 33.
Once we arrived, the nervousness moved to excitement. There was too much to do to be nervous. We walked over to transition, parted ways, then headed to our respective spots to set up. I met up with a friend from back in Atlanta, discussed some morning logistics, then headed to my spot to set up.
I set up transition as well as I could, laid out my USMC towel that has served as my base for every race. My new untested wetsuit was laying in wait.
Once transition was finished, I met back up with my wife and Jimmy (friend from Atl.) We then headed over to the swim start which was one mile away. We arrived at 7:00 am. Me and Jimmy threw our wetsuits on and went for a quick dip. This was my first time in a wetsuit in water of any kind. It was cool and I was ok with it. I did a few freestyle strokes, then headed out of the water. Jimmy's start time was 7:15 and mine.. in my pretty HOT PINK swim cap was 7:20. Same age group, split apart because of it's size. Start time approached fast. I was nervous becasue the water conditions were rough. The wetsuit provided a little bit of mental comfort. Not much though. 7:20 came and we were off.
