Pre-race routine:

My usual up very early and arrive early. It is always a 1 hour drive and I like to arrive on time to get a prime rack spot and have plenty of time to take it all in and get acclimated.-no stress
Event warmup:

I never seem to get in the water for this race, just stretched my arms some and wiggled into my wetsuit
Swim
  • 05m 11s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

I suspect the course was measured a little short because my time was really good. However I stayed in the pack the whole swim which is unusual for me so maybe I was faster. No panicky moments even when kicked or bumped etc. I counted strokes, focused on form and finishing my strokes when I could. Lots of interruptions in the crowd.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing I guess
Transition 1
  • 02m 48s
Comments:

It's a long uphill run to the bikes so Im ok with the time. A Volunteer jogged with me and unzipped my wetsuit and helped get it off my arms. No real issues off the feet
What would you do differently?:

nothing I guess
Bike
  • 18m 42s
  • 6 miles
  • 19.25 mile/hr
Comments:

since the race was shortened to a mini sprint due to the weather I just hammered it and let my HR spike. I did shift off the big ring on Ridge road like I always do but once over that first steep climb I stayed on top of the gear on that stretch in the middle to high teens and more. On the back stretch I was averaging in the low 20;s then high 20's almost 30 on the return legs
What would you do differently?:

Get a new bike
Transition 2
  • 00m 7s
Comments:

Everything about T-2 went perfect, but I still don't believe the time-seven seconds? I was out of my shoes on Virginia parkway shortly after making the turn, passed some people that way on the downhill and didn't have to worry about my feet or shoes when I hit the chaos near the dismount line-just trotted in and racked my bike.Had my shoes on, put my race belt and hat on as I ran out of the TA
What would you do differently?:

How can I fix a 7 second transition?
Run
  • 15m 58s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

What can i say? Ive been running 30-50 miles per week and everyday so i am faster but my focus as been on the half marathon distance for Kansas and building a base for Whiterock.IN a stand alone 2 mile run I think 14 or less is possible for me
What would you do differently?:

nothing except dig deeper and beat that guy.
Post race
Warm down:

bottle of water, quickly loaded up to beat the storms, they were letting everyone out of transition before all the riders were in encouraging everyone to be loaded and clear the area before the storms came

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Well it seems to be one of my better results as far as placement goes. I have never raced this distance, always sprints and longer so I'm not sure how to compare it. The results posted don't rank my splits individually so I have to just study the results to get an idea where I stand. The swim remains a question mark in-spite of a good result.

Event comments:

They do a good job, too bad the weather forced a change but that distance is fun to race. Is it considered sandbagging if I sign up for a mini again?

Didn't take long to find a rhythm even though there was lots of contact and crowded. I even took a kick in the chest-knocked the wind out of me a bit
Suit: 2 XU
Course: A big square. Same lake as last year but laid out better I think-psychologically it didn't look as long with even legs as the out and back semi triangle version does

I really wanted a 20mph split for this race since it was shortened-so close. Windy for the uphill portion and fast for the downhill/down wind portion. I passed allot, don't think I was passed, if I was it was early into the bike leg

I felt crappy as usual but determined ot have a good run split on a short course. I passed a bunch of runners and wasn't passed til the very end by a guy in my age group. I had been pacing off him about mid way when he passed me, i held back just enough so he could hear my feet and knew I was there, we chatted some, he faded and I passed near the Y, I began to pick up the pace in the last 1/4 mile but he out sprinted me in the last 50 yards or so. I think he played possum a bit back there but he denied it.
