Swim
Comments: This felt pretty good, I never felt taxed, so I probably could have pushed the pace a bit harder. But for the first open water swim of the year I'm pretty pleased. I like the time trial format, it really does reduce congestion and make for a nice smooth swim. What would you do differently?: Push a bit harder. Transition 1
Comments: I never practice transitions and it shows. There is a fairly long run up to the transition area from the lake included in this time, but still pretty slow relative to the top competition. I gave up about a minute on average to the guys in front of me here. What would you do differently?: Practice and be quicker/more efficient. Bike
Comments: Pretty solid effort here too, I started off passing a lot of people holding a pretty high average speed, but I faded a little in the last 5 miles where some of the larger hills lie. Just not strong enough on the bike at this point to hold an agressive pace for very long. I was happy to see they closed the road in and out of the park to traffic during the race this year, that really cut down on congestion and what was in my opinion a dengerous situation. What would you do differently?: Ride more. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty good transition, except I fumbled around trying to get my right running shoe on, probably about 10 seconds lost there. What would you do differently?: Just get my shoe on without difficulty... Run
Comments: I knew the run wouldn't be blazing fast, I just haven't been able to train the run enough or do any intensity at all really. I'm also 10-15 lbs heavier than I'd like to race at, so that slows me down some too. I just went as hard as I could. The air temp wasn't that bad, but I was feeling pretty hot as there wasn't much wind. It was a decent run considering, but hopefully I will improve a bit before the next race. What would you do differently?: Run more and do some speed/tempo workouts as health allows. Post race
Warm down: Drank some water, had some pizza and watermelon, got my results and saw I didn't quite make it into the rewards, stretched, packed up the truck, and headed home. I had an awesome lunch at Beck's with the wife when I made it home :) What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of fitness, lack of effort, knee injury over the winter. Event comments: One of the best events I do all year, always a great time! Last updated: 2012-01-03 12:00 AM

This is one of my favorite races to dao every year, so I was pretty pumped and looking forward to it. I'm finally running a decent amount again coming off knee problems in the winter, but I didn't expect to lay down a great run. Today was more about having fun, although I was secretly hoping to earn another piggy bank (given out for age group awards). The race is only about 50 miles from home, so I just drove down in the morning and did packet pickup and transition setup. The wife elected to sleep in, so I was flyinf solo for this one. Everything went fairly routine pre-race...
The race is a time trial start, and my age group was toward the end, so I had a while to just relax and talk to a few friends. I got into my wetsuit about 20 min early, and went out and swam about 150-200 yards to loosen up. The water felt great!
