Swim
Comments: I seemed to stay on the outside of the group, making the swim actually longer. The triangle shaped course made turns interesting and I didn't turn enough on the first one and swam off course a bit. What would you do differently?: Hold tighter to the buoys, it probably cost a few minutes on my time. Otherwise I was happy with my performance. Transition 1
Comments: took time to dry off and apply sunscreen (good thing I did because I would have completely burned if not) and to put on socks. What would you do differently?: probably nothing. although the times were higher than usual I felt it was important for a longer race to get these things done. Bike
Comments: had a gel every 30 minutes or so, and went through 3 bottles of gatorade pro. took the ride nice and easy so my run would be faster. I'm glad I did. What would you do differently?: work on staying in aerobars. had to get out of them for maybe 30 minutes total due to saddle pain. Transition 2
Comments: could not find my running socks. would not have been a big deal except my cycling socks give me blisters (did not wear the running socks on the bike because I prefer thicker socks for a longer ride) finally shook them out of my towel and everything was fine after that. What would you do differently?: next time bringing a second towel. hadn't planned on drying off in t1 and my towel had everything on top of it...oops. Run
Comments: passed a lot of people on course walking. that was why I took the bike easy. I ran from aid station to aid station and tracked my time with the gps watch....averaged about 9 min/mile until about the last two which were just a little higher. I walked at the aid stations and got ice water and a cold towel. a few stations i got coke or heed and some oranges. took a gel early on before the oranges were out. What would you do differently?: nothing. run was went as planned. Post race
Warm down: crossed the line and walked a little bit, drank some water and sat down. after I recovered a little I stretched and got in the lake. What limited your ability to perform faster: bike and run base. I was very happy with my times and that I made it about 9-10 miles before hitting the wall where the run became a mental game. First HIM so the next ones should be even better with more training! Event comments: The event, the aid stations and the post race were very good. The only thing that i might change is having port-o-jons on the bike course. Last updated: 2012-01-04 12:00 AM
