Age Group Rank = 4/13
Pre-race routine:

Up and driving. Sleepless night for some reason and sore neck and back.
Event warmup:

I was able to get a 500 yard swim in 50's and 100's My times for these were under 2 minutes so I was hopeful for a good swim
Swim
  • 06m 44s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

Same as above. I am going to find a way to get some real swim coaching before Kansas.
What would you do differently?:

Find the missing piece.
Transition 1
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

It was a very long run winding our way through the hallways of the high school to the transition area. Next year the construction will be done and there is a shorter-more elegant path to be had
What would you do differently?:

Not much, passed in the hallway one of the guys who passed me in the pool.
Bike
  • 35m 59s
  • 13 miles
  • 21.68 mile/hr
Comments:

This race was all about the bike> I have looked forward to racing on my Kuota and was hopeful of finally getting my 20 mph avg. I got 21.7 so I probably could have backed off a bit and had a better run
What would you do differently?:

Maybe turn it down just a notch-not much it was a good ride
Transition 2
  • 00m 39s
Comments:

everything went smoothly but I had pulled my helmet off while running with my bike and was scolded by a volunteer so I set it back on my head. My new tri shoes worked flawlessly for both transitions.
What would you do differently?:

The transition went well but bricks are needed
Run
  • 30m 12s
  • 3.6 miles
  • 08m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

It was hard. I had no idea yet that is was not a 5k as advertised so I felt like I had really blown my run! In any case running in the 7's after the bike, for me is still out of reach
What would you do differently?:

Not sure
Post race
Warm down:

stand around drink water, eat pizza and watch people

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing much other than an aggressive bike split but that was by design and I achieved the goal I wanted there. Maybe a hard transition run once a week after my commute and a 5 mile brick after my weekend long rides. The long term goals are Kansas 70.3 and Redman not sprints-but I would like to do well in the sprints. EDIT-I looked up the results again on a whim, now I am 4th

Event comments:

I went in to it with my bike split at the forefront of my mind and that paid off. Looking back over the last 2 years of sprints I have moved up my age group from the bottom to the top 5ish. I was disappointed to not make the top three but can't complain the pieces are coming together and next year I "age up" there are some fast guys there too and some of my age group will also move up but maybe the field thins out some i will get some results.

Suit: PI Trisuit
Course: A serpentine pool swim in a 25 yard pool-swim under the ropes. Jump in the deep end and push off the wall. This process screws with me, I cant seem to glide under the ropes gracefully and floundered a bit to start swimming. Then there is fumbling to get the exit ladder and the 15 ft or so to the timing mat

153 avg, 159 max. 153 is 5bpm above my estimated LT. I knew I was riding it hard but I really wanted a 20+ bike split out of my new tri bike.
