Swim
Comments: This swim went pretty well. It wasn't killer fast but I was somewhatclose to the middle and my sighting seemed to be right on. I went wide at the turn and as I mentioned on the course I think I sighted off of the flags rather than the exit buoy. I ended up going wide for the first 100 yards of the return. But other than that my path was very true Expecially when compared to my last few swims. What would you do differently?: Nothing really other than the obligatory swim more. My shoulder did not act up, I didn't kill my self but I was fressher for the bike. Transition 1
Comments: Long path from the swim to Transition but I ran more of it than I usually do. I haven't put my quick release back on my garmin since it was in the shop so I took time to put it on the bike from my hat. My "flying" mount was slow, but pretty uneventful. I didn't have my bento on the bike so I had to load more stuff in my pockets. Didn't have to... but wanted to have it. I took a lot of time getting everything on before I headed out. What would you do differently?: 1) Go sockless for a sprint. 2) Keep a race bento with my phone etc 3) Quick Release 4) Keep my glasses in the bento and put them off after we are moving Bike
Comments: I actually thought I was going pretty fast on the course but others were going faster. In general I felt ok, no major cramps, but I did get a bit queasy after about 10 miles. I had been in aero most of the time up to that point. What would you do differently?: probably push harder. but only if I was feeling better. Transition 2
Comments: On the dismount my shorts got caught on the seat so I took a more cautous approach on my dismount. Again took too long changing out my belt, watch, head band, hat etc. I should have done some of it while moving. Taking time to squirt my self down with my water bottle was time well spent. Run
Comments: No suprise, I walked a lot of the run. I ran maybe the first 1/4 mile then I started run walking the rest. I just couldn't keep myself moving and if I did my heart rate seemed way too high, though just around high 150s, and I couldn't keep moving. I'm going to continue to blame the illness, but also know it was run fitness. What would you do differently?: Run lots, mostly easy, sometimes hard. Post race
Warm down: Jumped straight into the ice bath, felt much better. Then I got up and watched for my wife to come through. We went to the CyTri tent and got a beer (and my sandles) before I started to look for my parents. We hung out for a while and then I headed back for another beer and some pizza before we packed up and headed out. What limited your ability to perform faster: Illness and training time. Event comments: OUM always has the best races. Last updated: 2012-01-07 12:00 AM

First some background. About 6 weeks prior to this race I had a last minute overseas trip where my bag was lost in the process. I caught a bug on the return trip, and it lingered so my workout volume was pretty much Nil till about 2 weeks prior to the race and even now a few days after the race I still have some congestion.
My wife and I checked in our bikes the night before and everything except the water and breakfast was packed and ready to go. I got up around 4:30 and got the coffee started, water, etc and got ready. It is a short 30 minute drive to the race, but parking was a bear, we had to park behind the school across the street and make up our own spot. But we got into transition quickly, and moved to the race start.
Knowing that I wasn't going to be breaking any land speed records - or my own still feeling a little sick I didn't really do a warmup for this race. I wasn't nervous and I intended to take the swim slow.
My parents were in town visiting and they showed up at the entrance to the swim start and brought my son. I hadn't paid too close attention to my wave times but they called the blue caps and I moved in with them. I was looking at the group as a bit young and someone pointed at my calf and said I might be in the wrong group. Turns out I had been given the wrong cap but my group was 2 waves back so I just went with the right group.
