Swim
Comments: First time ever -- I got kicked in the mouth. Also, off the start, there were about six of us who roared off the line for several hundred yards together. At some point, we split and I was definitely in the second group. Turns out, the top two swim finishers were in my age group and they were 19:11 and 19:12 -- more than a minute and a half ahead of me. Never sprinted, but I did work the first 200-300 and the last 50-75 yards. What would you do differently?: I swam straight into the second or third marker. As soon as I caught the wave ahead of me...I was trying to steer around people and forgot about the buoy. Also, I could have started kicking earlier; I only kicked for about the last 90 seconds. All in all, very good swim that I wouldn't change except to make faster. I was relaxed, yellow goggles were correct for the light. Transition 1
Comments: Ranked 84th overall and 18/67 in age group. Not real pleased with this even though I didn't make any "mistakes". Heart rate was up in the 150s during transition. Need to be faster taking off wetsuit. Passed at least 3 people while running through the bike racks and up to the road. Aaron Gardner must have been in T1 with me -- he passed me on the road in the first :30. No problem with new Oakley glasses. While I've trained in them a lot and rode in the rain with them, I didn't know if they would fog due to wet face/head the way my Tifosi glasses did. I started with them in the vents of helmet and put them on after shoes were all squared away. What would you do differently?: Faster. Faster. Faster. Bike
Comments: I repassed Aaron about 2 miles into the race. I expected to see him again on the bike but didn't until the run. I was passed by someone in my age group on a P4 about 4 miles from T2 -- he was maintaining a pace that must have been 1.5 mph above me. Gave chase to no avail. At first uphill he cruised away. Heart rate stayed in high 140s and into 150s throughout -- average 148. Drank 80% of a bottle of Perform. Ate a gel 10 minutes into ride and 50 minutes into ride. Had gels taped to top tube which worked well. What would you do differently?: I'm not disappointed, but the only negative surprise of the day may be the bike ride. I thought during and just after the race that I was faster. Faster absolutely and faster comparatively. I can live with that disappointment. I worked hard the whole way, was focused for the entire hour, stuck to my nutrition plan -- excepting there were a few ounces that I meant to drink and didn't -- stayed in the big ring and used my gears to keep the cadence up. More fitness and less body weight are what I need to change for next year. Transition 2
Comments: 177 overall and 29/67 in age group. I came up to the dismount line entirely by surprise -- skidded back tire a bit. The dismount followed by a sharp downhill with bike in hand to the T2 was a bit awkward. I ended up running with bike shoes on though I really like to run barefoot with shoes on pedals. What would you do differently?: Pre-ride the last half mile of course. Run
Comments: Took water 5-6 times. Aid stations were well placed and staffed. Found myself passing people on uphills for perhaps first time EVER. Was very worried on the corners due to unsure footing. At one hairpin turn, I ended up stomping on some of the orange cones that were supposed to separate the lanes of traffic. Last year at Nation's I ran 45:28 -- would have like to have bested that split. It is easy to blame the hills and gravel for the extra time -- but I'm in much better shape today and about 8 pounds lighter. I should have pushed harder on mile 5-6. What would you do differently?: Work the end of the race more. I found a pace and was working it but after mile three I should have stepped up to see what was in there. Post race
Warm down: Very light stretching. Ate. Collected things and left. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing. I had no problems or major mistakes. This was a PR by 11 minutes. Great water, fairly flat bike course. More training, less body weight and more aggressiveness on the course will make me faster. Event comments: Heart rate 104/152/168; 2,455 calories. I will be back. I've done it three times on two courses. Good people, fast field and it is close to home. Also, the neoprene chip holder as swag was a nice and appreciated touch. Not a fan of the gravel. Last updated: 2012-01-07 12:00 AM

Met Patrick Pannett at house and drove down together. Left at 6.20 arrived right at 8.00. Able to get out of house only waking up Dana and none of the kids. Ate two oatmeal packets and a tea at house. Ate banana and a tea in car. Drank liquid Powerbar upon arrival. Wore new kit from 2xU -- very good stuff excepting that my gut hangs out above the waistline and no doubt offends the sensibilities of all who dare to look.
After bathroom break, packet pick up which went smoothly, chips and body marking, set up transition. Was in the very first row of bikes near the swim entrance and run exit. Easy to find bike but difficult to run the length of T1 with bike in hand across grass.
Swam for about 15 minutes -- twice as long as normal. Hamstrings felt really tight and stretched legs while standing watching first four waves leave. Ate a gel about 25 minutes before swim. Also, drank one 20 oz. bottle of Perform while at car/packet/set up of T1.
