Run
Comments: They gave me 1st for my AG because they removed the guy ahead of me (Dave Kalmes, 2nd ovrall) because he was the 1st Master (Age 40+). Not sure I like that. I was the 2nd master age guy. Run went pretty good. I started out fast as my first 3 miles were: 5:42, 5:57, 5:39. Add the .1 and it would have been around a 17:40 or so 5k. That's a bit fast for me for the first 3 of a 15k. Around the 3.5 mile mark I was passed by eventual winner Braden Richardson. Dave K passed me just after mile 4. What would you do differently?: I thought by starting fast I could distance myself from the rest of the pack and any chasers. Had I known the abilities of the others a little better, I would have ran in a group, maybe the 3 of us, and not expended so much energy early on. Post race
Warm down: Just stood around. Not doing a warm-down run may have been a mistake. I felt ok after the race and had some water and post-race food. However, just before the awards started then for about 3 more hours I didn't feel to great. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing. I left it all out there. On the way back the wind was coming from the East and we were running right into it so that didn't help. Event comments: I rate the race as 'average' because the registration fee is $22 w/o a shirt or any swag and its manually timed. That's a little much to just run. Tech Shirts are an additional $15. If the race included socks, shirts (non-tech), or something, and it were $25 advance, maybe $28 day of, it would be a better value and they'd probably draw more participation. Woke up around 5:30--too early. Had breakfast around 6:30. Hectic morning rounding up the kids and getting out the door. Jace had a friend, Garsen, overnight, but they were pretty good about getting up and ready. When we were at the race getting Garsen registered we were told Team RED paid for some race entries for kids so Garsen was free. Cool.
Sofia did the Melby Kids Mile, which didn't go too well. She ran the whole thing last year--this year, not so much, and she complained and cried. Kids. I ran a few minutes before that, then ran some of the Kids Mile with Sofia and Carin. I waited near the end and jogged in with Sofia. After that I continued to warm up and got in about four 15 second sprints. Total warmup time of 18 min. Not very good.
