Run
Comments: Run was a good pace not to hard. Happy to keep leader in site and only about 20 seconds back. What would you do differently?: Nothing. No one went flying off the front and held it. Leaders started a bit quick, but then settled down and/or we (group of about 7 or so) caught up fairly quick. Transition 1
Comments: Had trouble getting left shoe closure fastened. Not sure what I did or didn't do, but I had both shoes on, then started leaving with my bike and found that my left shoe almost came off--the closure was wide open. What would you do differently?: Nothing, but make sure my dang shoes are on properly. Bike
Comments: This was tough. Wind was from the NW so when going south it wasn't bad--could kind of use it. Going east was great. Going west, not so great, but a lot of 75th when going west is in a valley so it wasn't so bad until the top of Genoa Hill. Going north on CR5 sort of sucked. You really felt the cross wind--unless you rode side by side like I saw some guys doing. What would you do differently?: Maybe I should have pushed it a bit harder on CR5 going north which would have been gambling on my ability to run well in RUN 2. I think I should have taken my chances. Oh well, still turned out pretty well. Transition 2
Comments: I dismounted my bike and followed the carpet they had over the timing cords across the entrance to T2. Some of the carpet went to the left of the entrance. There was a women there directing people in. I start to follow the carpet, missing the entrance. Instead of directing me into T2, she moved out of the way and let me miss the entrance. Only by a few feet, but I had to back up and enter T2. My hands and toes weren't too cold, but still didn't have complete normal use of them. I had injinji socks on (toe socks) and kept hooking my left pinky toe on outer left of the shoe opening and couldn't get my foot in. I actually laughed the third time and was like "What the &$%# is going on.". Eventually I got the shoe on and ran out of T2. What is with my left foot?? What would you do differently?: Not sure... Run
Comments: I pushed hard at the start then got into a steady pace. I started RUN 2 in 5th position, caught one guy about a 1/2 mile out on the run and was gaining steadily on the guy in 3rd, but just ran out of course. What would you do differently?: Once on the Douglas Trail to go north for the last mile or so, I was maybe 45 seconds out of 3rd. I should have given it a shot and went harder to see if I could catch him. I finished 30 seconds out of 3rd. Post race
Warm down: Did nothing to 'warm down'. It was too cold. I changed clothes and handed out about 100 CLIF Bars :) What limited your ability to perform faster: The wind. I bettered my run times from 2010, but my bike was slower due to the wind. Event comments: Results are still messed up. I don't know where to start here. They had on the website that the AG's were 5 year increments, but results list by 10 years. Nothing was on the site about Amateur and Elite divisions, but they pulled the people from the AG's that registered as ELITE. I am currently, 9/28/12, sitting at 1st in AG 40-49, but I know that the guy in 3rd overall is 40 or 41 and I am 41 so I am really not 1st in my AG. Had bike and gear ready to go the night before. Breakfast at about 6am of quinoa w/cinnamon & little brn sugar and some almond milk mixed in. Glass of water, then drank about a 2/3 quart of coconut water between then and race time. Banana about 7:15am, CLIF blok at 7:45. 8am race start.
Jogged/ran about 1.5 miles. It was cold, but warming up you could tell the temp was going to be ok to start.
