Swim
Comments: I wanted to go off with the elite men wave this year because my goal time was to come in under a hour. I had a few open water swim practices this year so I was more prepared than last year. I felt relaxed my entire swim and I was more than pleased with my swim time. I was able to shave more than a minute and a half off my time from last year. I did not feel gassed when I exited the water and felt I could have pushed a little more the last 100m but I was happy with my swim performance. What would you do differently?: Maybe push a tad harder the last 100m. Transition 1
Comments: I was able to shave 30 seconds off my time from last year. This was the first time I had my bike shoes already clipped into my pedals but I did fairly well for my first time. What would you do differently?: Work on getting into my shoes more smoothly. Bike
Comments: I pushed pretty hard on the bike. It was the first time I raced with my new Tri bike and was extremely pleased. I was able to shave over 3 minutes off my time from last year. There was a strong west wind so going out was really fast and was hard coming back. I was only passed by one person and I passed a few people on the bike course. I did have just a little trouble getting out of my shoes before the dismount area. What would you do differently?: Work on getting out of my shoes more smoothly. Transition 2
Comments: I felt my T2 went fairly smoothly. Nothing to note. Run
Comments: I wanted to average around a 6.40 pace and fell short of that. I pushed the bike pretty hard and felt a little winded on the run but was able to take off a minute from my time last year. I was passed by a couple of people on the run that were flying. What would you do differently?: Work on getting my run times down with training. Post race
Warm down: Grabbed some water and waited for my wife and sister to finish. What limited your ability to perform faster: My goal was to come in under an hour and I was able to do that by 2 and a half minutes. That being said I would have liked my run time to be faster. I think I pushed hard on the bike that maybe had something to do with my slower run time. Event comments: This was my 2nd year racing at Hawk Island and my wife and sister's first. I feel that it is a great race for beginners and also seasoned and faster athletes. The atmosphere was terrific and the volunteers were great. It is a great race to start the year off with and I will be back next year. Last updated: 2012-01-08 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:50 and showered, ate some peanut butter and jelly toast, and loaded the car. I wanted to leave at 5:20 but my wife wanted to leave at 5:30 (she won;) We ended up leaving our house around 5:30 and met my sister at the park around 6:45.
My wife, sister, and I set-up our transition areas and I stretched a little bit before heading to the water. I swam for just a few minutes before the first swim wave started.
