Swim
Comments: There was no "navigating" or sighting done by me, I simply focused on having swimmers around me at all costs and going roughly the same direction. It is a fairly bland terrain around the lake and very little development so there is nothing to sight off of on the far shore, the morning sun interferes with the return sighting. It worked for me just swimming and not looking around to much. my watch showed 1:20, formal results showed 1:09-no idea why. It was still a good swim for me but I didn't feel good-side stitch after the first lap and just never felt great but I focused on staying in a crowd and keeping swimmers on my left to reduce the tendency to swerve off to the left and go someplace else. I have no idea why the swim went well-bad swim at KS-no wet suit, rough conditions, good swim at OKC-wet suit and smooth water. After the second lap I stood around in waist deep water for a few seconds regrouping then walked up to transition, stopping by the wet suit strippers-they did ok, not as great as hoped but they all seemed under 14 years old. The 60 lbs 13 year old girl offered her hand to help me up so I made a special point not to fling her into the lake. The walk was like Trina said-probably a full kilometer up to the bikes. I Walked up to my bike, loaded nutrition and walked to the mount line. I always feel better after the swim-relieved to finally be doing something I know a little about. What would you do differently?: I dunno-it was a better swim than I can really do, the wetsuit helped alot. Hopefully this is something I can build on Transition 1
Comments: I took it easy through T-1. My lack of good recent training and other set backs gave me permission to just enjoy the the race and head out well adjusted and ready to ride What would you do differently?: I wore my jersey under my wet suit-I would skip that and either wear my try suit or a tri top or none. I picked the jersey for the pockets Bike
Comments: The bike course is the best they could do, the lake is where it is and since you need a body of water for a triathlon you are stuck with the roads in the vicinity. No real complaints but I know not far out of that city are some fine roads What would you do differently?: Not blow off the 6 weeks leading to the event. 3 more 100 mile rides and some long ride/run bricks would have been ideal Transition 2
Comments: I just clipped, dismounted and walked in for the same reasons that i took it easy in T-1 T-2-a costume change-clean shorts, shirt, shoes, socks hat glasses etc. A few minutes to sit, wipe off the salt and grit then walked to the run exit. What would you do differently?: I was hoping there would be sponges or something to wash off a little in the changing tent-so next time I might stash some baby wipes in my transition bag. I just wanted to get the grit and salt off a little. Run
Comments: I was trashed for all the same reasons previously mentioned but I really have no complaints about the "run". I struggled a little with cramps but that was to be expected and not that big of a deal. I enjoyed the aid stations and wished I had taken the time to vote for one. I have blisters in strange places on my toes. This was a very well supported run, plenty of nutrition and variety and almost too enthusiastic volunteers meeting you on the trail pushing whatever they have What would you do differently?: Be prepared-otherwise I think I managed the run segment pretty well under the conditions. I put is down as below average only because I feel like I CAN run better if properly prepared. I was on my feet way too much the day/night before. I side effect of sleeping in a truck. A quiet hotel with few distractions would be ideal or a camper shell on my truck to make it more accommodating. Post race
Warm down: Stand around dazed and drink broth until my mind re-groups What limited your ability to perform faster: I probably should not have even attempted this under the financial and personal set backs. I made the trip with $50 for food gas and lodging. I slept in my truck etc. This added a layer of additional stress and discomfort but sometimes I get a sort of feral dog mentality- ready to sleep on the ground and bite people :) I'll call it a good race because I finished. I think i can finish before dark under better conditions but at this stage I don't see myself going for the iron distance anytime soon. Event comments: Well run, enthusiastic event, great volunteers, responsive staff and adequate setting. The course is potentially a very fast one depending on conditions-the big variable this time of year would be wind, mostly, and it is hard to predict the temperatures. There was nothing routine about this race-my wife left by surprise 6 weeks ago and nothing has been the same-ended up sleeping in my truck and eating muffins the morning of the race
Not much-last minute details like SN bags and transition bags, load my bottles etc
