Swim
Comments: Water was a bit cold, but not as bad as the Season Opener, so it didn't really bother me. Sighting was a bit off at times. Sometimes, I'd be doing well, but other times, I seemed to be veering too far towards the shore. I think my subconscious really wanted me to get out of the water! Kept up bilateral breathing for the entire race, which was a first. What would you do differently?: I'll keep working on my swim to see if I can speed up a bit. Since my sighting is clearly a bit rusty, I'll start working on that at Walden, since it's warm enough to start heading there regularly at this point... Transition 1
Comments: Nothing out of the ordinary here... What would you do differently?: I suppose I could speed this up more, but compared to other people, I don't seem to be losing a lot of time here, so it's not really a priority. Bike
Comments: The bike went pretty well, I felt good throughout. I did have a couple of moments that sent my heart up into my throat though. First, there was a left turn early on, and the woman in front of me was clearly hesitant going into it. I called out "on your left" and started to pass, after which, she started sharply turning to the left and we almost collided. Luckily, we didn't, and on I went. The other incident was that I came in fast right on top of a partially hidden, sizable pothole near the end. Ended up just bouncing out the other side, which I was very thankful for. I also got yelled at by another racer, since I was mistaken about where the no pass zone near the turnaround ended, so I started passing a few people a bit earlier than I should have. I apologized, although I probably still looked like a jerk. Not my intention though! What would you do differently?: I would have loved to break 20 mph, but otherwise, it went well... Transition 2
Comments: My right shoe took a bit longer to slip on that I would have liked, but otherwise, this went well. What would you do differently?: Just as with T1, I suppose there's always room for improvement, but this was under a minute, so it's not really something I'm concerned about improving at the moment... Run
Comments: While my time wasn't bad, this really wasn't a great run for me. I had issues getting my breathing into a comfortable rhythm from the start. That improved after a bit, but there were a couple of hills that seemed to set my breathing issues off a again. It was likely due to the fact that I had a side cramp on and off throughout, since that tends to mess with my breathing. What would you do differently?: Not much. I can't really control whether or not I get a cramp, and it wasn't a terrible run overall, just somewhat uncomfortable... Post race
Warm down: At some pizza, chatted with some people and waited around for the award ceremony. Apparently they had a glitch with the timing company though, so they announced the overall winners, but said the rest were going to be mailed after they fixed the issue. Got an email later saying that I won 2nd in my AG, since 2nd and 3rd OA were from my AG, so that bumped us all up a couple of spots for the awards. Event comments: I really like Max Performance races, they're very well organized. Will be doing the MA State Triathlon through them next month, which I'm looking forward to! Woke up at 5AM, had a breakfast sandwich and drove the hour or so down to Onset. Picked up my packet in plenty of time, and set up in transition. Chatted a bit with the other people racked around me.
Actually did hop in the water for a bit, although not for too long. Otherwise, just hung around waiting for the race to start...
