Swim
Comments: I felt that I did pretty good on the swim for me. This is my weakest event and for the most part I did well for my ability. The water was really warm (or felt warm) and I remember thinking that I wanted the swim to be done. I didn't get hung up around the buoys like my last race. I still think I could push the pace just a touch harder. What would you do differently?: Push a little bit harder. Transition 1
Comments: My wetsuit got stuck on my heels and I need to practice getting into my shoes once I am on the bike. Bike
Comments: I pushed the bike hard and was happy with my overall performance. I put straight Powerade in my water bottle and I didn't like the sweetness. I have to remember to mix 50/50. I passed 4 or 5 on the bike course and was not passed once. Transition 2
Comments: Shoes got stuck for a second....had to stop and readjust. Run
Comments: The run killed me in this race. There were 7 people in front of me when I started the run and I ended up getting passed by several racers. I was not prepared for the heat which was a big factor for me. My legs felt fine so I don't think I over extended myself on the bike. I tried to cool down at the aid stations by dumping water over myself which helped a little. My split time was faster on the way back. What would you do differently?: Try and prepare running in the heat to get used to how it feels. Post race
Warm down: Jumped in the lake to cool off and waited for my wife to finish. What limited your ability to perform faster: The heat and of course my swimming ability. Event comments: I raced at the Gull Lake Tri last year and it was a night and day difference. A new race director took it over this year and made some very positive changes. I was very impressed with the level of competition for this race as well. There were lots of volunteers and the atmosphere was terrific. My wife and I will be back next year for the race. Woke up, showered, and ate some peanut butter toast. I then woke my wife up and loaded the van so we could take off. Pretty much the same routine that I always do before a race.
Arrived at Gull Lake and my wife and I set-up our transition areas. I took my bike out for a short ride to get my shoes clipped in and ready to go. I then went for a short swim about 10 minutes before the race started.
