Run
Comments: Maintained a decent pace, but was breathing harder than I cared to by the turnaround. I went out faster than I meant to, and I think it caught up with me by the end. What would you do differently?: More hills in training. More hills in training. Transition 1
Comments: Went pretty smoothly. No major issues, although I would like to learn to start with the shoes on the pedals. Someday. Bike
Comments: I wasn't prepared for just how challenging the hills were, and they weren't even particularly challenging hills. What would you do differently?: More training on hills. More training on hills. Transition 2
Comments: Again, transition was fairly smooth, with no issues that I can think of. What would you do differently?: I'd like to learn to get out of the pedals before getting off the bike. Running in bike shoes is just not a lot of fun. Run
Comments: Holy crap, this was hard. I was completely burned right at the start, and that ridiculous climb really didn't help. My calves were threatening to cramp up at the start, to the point that I had to stop a bit and stretch them out. Almost went to a walk climbing the last hill, but I'm glad I didn't, because it would have been difficult to start running again. What would you do differently?: More training on hills! Post race
Warm down: Water, fruit, and a really nice post-race massage. What limited your ability to perform faster: I've never felt it more powerfully: Speed is icing on the cake, and I need more cake. The hills just destroyed me, on both the bike and the run. I need to reevaluate this entire upcoming season. It would probably be best to think of the whole summer, including races, as preparation for next year. I don't have enough of a base to race convincingly this year, but I think I could get there by next Spring. Event comments: This was my first Max Performance race, and they clearly know what they're doing. Everything was very smooth and problem-free. The volunteers knew what they were doing, and I never had to wonder what to do or where to go. I'm looking forward to at least one other Max Performance race this summer, and maybe more. Got there early. Iced coffee and a buttered croissant for breakfast, like I've done before.
Easy jog for about a mile, followed by stretching.
