5150 Triathlon Series
83F / 28C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 24m 26s
Overall Rank = 273/3503
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 32/374
Pre-race routine:

Woke up early to have some breakfast and then headed over to transition area.
Event warmup:

None possible, the 1 mile walk from transition to swim start.
Swim
  • 19m 19s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had total open water swim freak out. It did not bother me swimming in the husband and in fact I did not find the water too cold or disgusting. I could never get into a good breathing pattern and after 600 yards thought of asking to be pulled from water.

The good thing was that I got so far to the right (toward center of river) that the current was so strong I could have just lied on my back and flew down the river.
What would you do differently?:

Relax and stay within myself.
Transition 1
  • 05m 23s
Comments:

It was about 800 yards from swim exit to the transition area. I ran the entire time and as I got closer to transition entrance, sat on park bench and ripped off the wetsuit. My transition time was within 30 seconds of fastest time in age group so I know I was moving quick.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 43s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.23 mile/hr
Comments:

My biking has certainly improved and was very happy to have maintained over 20 MPH on this bike course. I passed over 120 on the bike course alone and was only passed by a few. I eased off a little on the last out and back to 59th Street and need to push harder next year.
What would you do differently?:

Keep the pace the entire time.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Got in and out of this transition very quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 44m 48s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

I had a heel injury 3 weeks prior to this race and had not been able to run during that time period. I definitely felt I lost some speed without doing interval training. I was very happy to maintain pace which included the hills and finished within 2.5 minutes of stand alone 10k time in Central Park.
What would you do differently?:

Not get injured.
Post race
Warm down:

I finished so early that I was able to get a 1/2 hour massage in massage tent.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heel injury 3 weeks prior to race and freak-out in river.

Event comments:

This was a very high-end professionally run race. The volunteers were great and I loved the energy associated with this race. It is pricey but well worth the price. Looking forward to racing next year.
