Swim
Comments: Good swim - I started at a good comfortable pace and kept it going. I passed two people in the pool. I registered thinking 5:23 was accurate for 250 but I ended up faster than that. I got out of the pool still strong and winded but not real bad. I was in good shape getting out to the transition. What would you do differently?: Time myself better beforehand. I could have passed another swimmer on the last lap, but chose to hang back in fear of sprinting to get out the pool and having a lot of trouble on the early part of the bike. If I had ranked myself more appropriately, I probably could have drafted and finished even faster. Transition 1
Comments: I had everything laid out well and there weren't any problems. The temp increased probably 15 degrees from when I set up to when I got to T1 so I had extra clothes hanging off the bike needlessly. Ended up getting in the way. What would you do differently?: Not much. Bike
Comments: I was a little surprised by the rolling hills on the bike. Nothing real high, but they really rolled alot. It make it very difficult to get into any type of groove. I was constantly shifting gears to stay comfortable - powering up the hills was hard because they just kept coming - I didn't feel there was enough recovery on the back side of them. What would you do differently?: Train for hills differently. Increase frequency of uphills to strengthen my ability to get up them, as well as decrease recovery time on the backside. Transition 2
Comments: T2 went well. With more practice I could have done a little better, but not much. What would you do differently?: Not disturb T2 gear while going through T1 Run
Comments: Not a good run for me. I battled shin splints from 1mile to 2.5miles that had me stop a couple of times to stretch and walk. Really annoyed because I didn't have a problem with shin-splints during training. Last mile went really well, though, as I was in good aerobic shape for a strong finish. I had a good kick and a nice fast pace through the finish line. What would you do differently?: Not get shin splints. I don't know why they came on when they did, but it sure made me miserable. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: I was fast in the water, fast through transitions, and right on target on the bike. The shin splints during the run really slowed me down. I think more time on the bike doing hills would have helped alot as well. My water time probably could have been in the 4:30 range is I was seeded better. I passed the guy in front of me during lap 2, passed another person on lap 6 or so, and ended up drafting a 3rd person on lap 10. Event comments: Well run event. There were a couple of spots that were hairy - I ran into another racer when she was entering the finish area, and I was leaving T2 - I tried to stay right, but she was hugging the curb. There were some parts that I thought could have had cones or signs or a better explanation of how it would work. I would have liked to have seen the course beforehand but nothing was posted. Ran around trying to get everything organized - set up transition, make sure I was on time. I ate a cereal bar and drank 12oz coffee before the race. Ended up peeing constantly while waiting for my turn to jump in the pool. Not really a problem, but could have gotten uncomfortable had it been a regular group start.
Lots of stretching then standing and waiting for my turn to go into the pool.
